Chapter 5 - THE BRIDE WHO CHOSE THE TRUTH OVER HER FATHER

Evelyn Hart arrived the next day.

She returned the engagement ring.

Not to Julian.

To Gabriel.

He stared at it.

“This belongs to my son.”

“I know.”

“Then why give it to me?”

“Because if I see Julian right now, I might throw it at him.”

Clara liked her more every hour.

Evelyn brought something else.

Her father's tablet.

Not stolen.

Richard had left it logged into the shared family office.

Evelyn's attorney had already made a lawful forensic copy of documents she was authorized to access.

Gabriel raised an eyebrow.

“You brought counsel.”

“I grew up around rich men.”

Good answer.

The emails were devastating.

Richard Hart to Martin Sloane.

Months before Gabriel's fall:

G.F. remains the obstacle. Julian is persuadable if he believes the responsibility is his.

Another:

If Gabriel misses the winter board session, the timing improves considerably.

Then, two days before the warehouse accident:

Maintenance window confirmed?

Sloane:

Thursday, 6:30. He insists on inspecting Twelve personally.

No explicit instruction to hurt Gabriel.

But enough to make every person in the room cold.

Then one final email.

Sent three hours after Gabriel fell:

Not the outcome anticipated, but usable.

Gabriel read it twice.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“My father…”

Her voice failed.

Gabriel said nothing.

She continued:

“I knew he was ruthless in business.”

“Many people use that sentence before learning what ruthless means.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“I'm sorry.”

“You didn't loosen the railing.”

“No.”

“You didn't hide me.”

“No.”

“Then don't apologize for other adults.”

Clara watched Gabriel.

Another change.

Six months earlier, he would've spoken about blood obligations.

Today?

Individual responsibility.

Evelyn asked:

“Is Julian part of this?”

Gabriel answered carefully.

“Not the accident.”

Relief.

Then:

“The wedding?”

Gabriel did not protect his son.

“Yes.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“He really ordered the curtain.”

“Yes.”

“And your chair removed.”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

Tears came.

“I still love him.”

Nobody answered.

“That is unbelievably inconvenient.”

Clara finally said:

“Love usually is.”

Evelyn laughed through tears.

Then looked at Gabriel.

“I am going to testify about these emails.”

“You understand what that does to your father.”

“Yes.”

“And your family's company.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She looked toward the returned ring.

“Because if I marry Julian someday, I need to know I didn't become my father to protect him.”

Gabriel studied her for a long time.

Then:

“Good.”

It was the closest thing to approval he had ever given her.

That afternoon, investigators searched Hart Development offices.

Martin Sloane tried leaving through a parking garage.

He was stopped.

Inside his briefcase were financial documents.

And a photograph of Gabriel's warehouse staircase.

Taken the morning before the fall.
