Chương 4 - THE ACCIDENT TWO YEARS EARLIER

The port vote should have remained the priority.

It didn’t.

Because Paolo Rinaldi disappeared.

The Vitali attorney who requested old security plans emptied his apartment and missed two meetings.

Enzo found his car at Logan Airport.

No flight record.

Then Sofia discovered why he wanted the plans.

She brought Lorenzo an archived drawing.

“Your garage.”

“What about it?”

“Old camera system.”

She pointed.

“The conduit controlling the west driveway camera originally passed through a maintenance cabinet inside the lower garage.”

Lorenzo stared.

That camera had failed the night of his accident.

Two years earlier, Lorenzo left the estate during rain.

His car crossed an intersection.

A delivery truck ran a red light.

Impact.

Driver died.

Lorenzo survived.

Spinal cord injury.

Paralysis from the hips down.

Police called it a commercial vehicle accident.

The estate’s exterior camera might have captured the truck approaching.

Except it went offline thirteen minutes before Lorenzo left.

Technical fault.

At least according to the report.

Sofia said:

“Someone with the old plans would know where to kill that feed physically.”

Enzo became still.

“You think the accident was planned?”

“No.”

Sofia looked at him.

“I think a camera failure deserves another look.”

Exactly.

They reopened the records privately.

The delivery company no longer existed.

Its insurer dissolved.

The truck had been leased through a holding company.

That company shared an accountant with Ferreri Maritime.

Lorenzo stared at the report.

“No.”

Enzo said:

“Boss.”

“No assumptions.”

He had learned something from pain.

Evidence first.

They found the dead driver’s bank records.

Three weeks before the crash, his wife received a $90,000 transfer labeled settlement.

Source:

A consulting company controlled by Ferreri.

Then another detail.

The truck route had been changed that morning.

Who approved it?

Paolo Rinaldi.

Not directly.

His credentials.

Lorenzo looked at Enzo.

“Find him alive.”

“Trying.”

Sofia remained quiet.

Lorenzo noticed.

“What?”

She shook her head.

“You’re angry.”

“Brilliant diagnosis.”

“You get very still.”

“So?”

“So everyone else mistakes it for calm.”

He looked away.

“I spent two years believing weather and bad timing changed my body.”

Sofia leaned against the desk.

“Your body isn't the part they get to define.”

He looked at her.

She continued:

“If Ferreri caused the crash, then he caused the crash.”

A pause.

“He does not get ownership of everything that came after.”

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.

Rehab.

Pain.

Months learning transfers.

Pressure sores.

Phantom sensations.

Redesigning the estate.

The first time he attended a meeting in his wheelchair and watched twelve men avoid looking at it.

Ferreri did not get those years.

Sofia was right.

Again.

Annoying.

“I hate when you’re reasonable.”

“So does my staff.”

Then Enzo’s phone rang.

Paolo had been found.

Not dead.

Terrified.

Hiding inside his sister’s home in Rhode Island.

He agreed to talk.

What he said turned suspicion into structure.

Ferreri paid him for information.

First harmless things.

Schedules.

Security rotations.

Then the camera shutdown.

Paolo claimed he never knew the truck would hit Lorenzo.

He thought Ferreri wanted photographs of a meeting.

Maybe true.

Maybe cowardice.

But after the accident, Ferreri paid him $400,000.

Then kept him trapped with proof.

Two years later, Ferreri used him again.

Wedding access.

Estate security plans.

Not to hurt Bianca.

To coordinate the car that removed her without Vitali security interference.

Same network.

Same patience.

Ferreri had failed to kill Lorenzo once.

Now he was trying to destroy his authority instead.

Lorenzo smiled when he understood.

Enzo looked worried.

“That is not a pleasant smile.”

“No.”

Lorenzo rolled toward the window.

“Call the Bellandis.”

“About the port vote?”

“Yes.”

“What do we tell them?”

“The truth.”

Enzo stared.

“All of it?”

“Ferreri built his strategy around me being too proud to admit someone hurt me.”

Lorenzo turned.

May you like

“Let’s disappoint him.”
