Chapter 6 - THE STATION

The old station had been renovated twice.
But I remembered the platform.
Mei had stood there in a red coat twenty-five years earlier.
I arrived alone.
Technically.
My security chief ignored that instruction from three blocks away.
Good man.
Samuel stood beneath the station clock.
Lily beside him.
Not tied.
Not visibly threatened.
But two men stood behind her.
“Nathan.”
“Let her go.”
Samuel smiled sadly.
“You always did skip negotiations.”
“She's not part of this.”
“She became part of it the moment she corrected your Chinese.”
Lily rolled her eyes.
Even kidnapped, apparently.
“I corrected his pronunciation.”
Samuel looked annoyed.
“Not helping.”
I almost laughed.
My daughter.
“What do you want?”
“The notebook.”
“I don't have it.”
“Mei does.”
“Then why take Lily?”
“Because Mei will trade it.”
“No.”
Lily spoke.
Both of us looked at her.
“Mom won't.”
Samuel frowned.
“She loves you.”
“Exactly.”
Lily's voice remained calm.
“She spent twenty-five years regretting what fear cost her. She won't let fear make the next decision.”
Samuel's face hardened.
For the first time, I saw the man behind my oldest friend.
Not sophisticated.
Not loyal.
Afraid.
He had built his entire life around controlling information.
Lily represented the one piece he hadn't anticipated.
“Your father is responsible for more suffering than you understand,” Samuel said.
Lily looked at me.
Then him.
“Maybe.”
That hurt.
But she continued.
“Then he'll answer for what he actually did.”
Her eyes hardened.
“Not what you forged.”
Samuel grabbed her arm.
I moved.
One of his men drew a weapon.
I stopped.
“Nathan,” Lily said.
“I'm okay.”
No parent believes those words while a gun is near their child.
Samuel demanded the notebook again.
I reached inside my coat.
His men tensed.
I pulled out my phone.
“No notebook.”
“What are you doing?”
“Showing you something.”
The screen displayed a live video.
Mei.
Professor Lee's notebook open before her.
Beside her sat three federal investigators.
Samuel's face changed.
“You wouldn't.”
“I already did.”
“You'll destroy yourself.”
“Maybe.”
The hardest word I'd ever learned.
Maybe.
Maybe my company fell.
Maybe prosecutors found something I'd signed.
Maybe my reputation didn't survive.
For decades, I'd treated control as safety.
It wasn't.
Truth had a price.
I was finally willing to pay it.
Samuel's calm shattered.
He pulled a gun.
Not toward me.
Toward Lily.
Then someone struck him from behind.
The weapon fell.
The station erupted.
Security.
Federal agents.
Samuel's men running.
Lily dropped.
I reached her.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“Dad.”
I froze.
She froze too.
First time.
One word.
Dad.
She looked embarrassed.
“I didn't mean—”
I hugged her.
She let me.
Over her shoulder, Samuel was being handcuffed.
He looked at me.
“You'll lose everything.”
Maybe once those words would have terrified me.
I looked at Lily.
“No.”
May you like
I finally understood what everything meant.
