Chapter 12 - THE FATHER WHO CAME HOME BROKEN

Tessa saw her father in a hospital room overlooking the East River.

He was sitting upright.

His hands trembled.

A nurse had helped him shave.

He looked impossibly small.

“Dad?”

He turned.

For one terrible second, she thought he wouldn't recognize her.

Then his face crumpled.

“My little girl.”

Tessa crossed the room.

He opened his arms.

And eleven years disappeared.

She cried against his shoulder until she couldn't breathe.

He kept whispering apologies.

For leaving.

For lying.

For the mistakes that had destroyed their family.

When she finally stepped back, she asked the question that had haunted her since childhood.

“Why didn't you come home?”

His eyes filled.

“Because they threatened you.”

“Who?”

“Arthur. Victor. Others.”

“Mom thought you were dead.”

“I know.”

“Did you know she was alive?”

“Not until last year.”

Tessa sat beside him.

“Why did you help them?”

Her father looked down.

“I was young. Ambitious. I told myself I was building a better future for my family.”

He swallowed.

“By the time I understood what the numbers meant, people were already losing their homes.”

“Did you try to stop it?”

“Yes.”

“Was that enough?”

“No.”

The answer hurt.

But it was honest.

He reached for her hand.

“I can't ask you to forgive me.”

Tessa looked at the man she had mourned for eleven years.

“I don't know if I can.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

She squeezed his fingers.

“But I'm glad you're alive.”

Outside the room, Roman waited.

He had arranged medical care for the rescued witnesses through a victim assistance fund, then stepped back while the authorities handled their protection.

Tessa found him standing beside a vending machine.

“You didn't come inside.”

“It wasn't my place.”

She studied him.

“Thank you.”

“You don't owe me that.”

“I know.”

For a moment, they stood in silence.

Then Tessa asked, “What happens now?”

Roman looked tired.

“Arthur and Sloane are still missing.”

“And you?”

“I testify next week.”

“Against your family.”

“Against what my family did.”

Tessa looked down.

“Are you afraid?”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised her.

“Of prison?”

“Partly.”

“What else?”

Roman met her eyes.

“Of becoming the kind of man who knows the truth and still chooses comfort.”

Tessa reached for his hand.

He looked down at their joined fingers.

May you like

Neither spoke.

But something between them had changed.
