Chapter 5 - THE SERVER WHO RISKED EVERYTHING

Maya Thompson arrived at headquarters wearing a navy sweater and carrying a folder.

She looked nervous.

I stood when she entered.

“Thank you for coming.”

She shook my hand.

“Thank you for listening.”

Evelyn joined us.

We explained that the interview was voluntary, that retaliation was prohibited, and that Maya could have a support person present.

She declined.

Then she opened her folder.

Inside were copies of schedules, written instructions, and messages from Vanessa.

One message read:

VIP seating must be protected. Use judgment when placing walk-ins. Appearance matters.

Another was more explicit.

No work uniforms in the front section during dinner service.

I looked at Maya.

“Did Vanessa ever explain what she meant by appearance?”

Maya nodded.

“She said wealthy customers didn't want to sit near people who looked like they couldn't afford the menu.”

I felt anger rise.

“Did you challenge her?”

“Once.”

“What happened?”

“She cut my shifts.”

Maya looked down.

“I have a six-year-old son. I couldn't afford to lose my job.”

I nodded.

“What's his name?”

“Ethan.”

“Does he like school?”

Her expression softened.

“He loves dinosaurs.”

I smiled.

“So did Sophie at that age.”

Maya laughed nervously.

Then she became serious.

“I don't want revenge.”

I looked at her.

“What do you want?”

“I want to come to work without being afraid.”

The simplicity of the answer hurt.

She continued.

“I want to serve people without deciding whether they're rich enough to deserve kindness.”

I nodded.

“That's reasonable.”

Maya hesitated.

“Mr. Mercer, there's something else.”

I waited.

“Vanessa wasn't doing this alone.”

Evelyn leaned forward.

“What do you mean?”

Maya opened another folder.

“Someone from corporate told her to increase average spending per table.”

I frowned.

“That's a normal business goal.”

“Yes.”

Maya swallowed.

“But they also told her to make the dining room look more exclusive.”

I looked at Evelyn.

She looked back at me.

Maya continued.

May you like

“Vanessa said she was following orders.”

For the first time, I wondered whether the woman who had humiliated my daughter was merely the most visible part of a much larger problem.
