Chapter 8 - THE SECRET BEHIND THE ACCIDENT

The investigation into Enzo's accident uncovered a coordinated scheme.
Financial records, communications, and witness statements suggested that Victor Salerno and Matteo Russo had arranged for a truck to intercept Enzo's SUV.
The apparent objective had been to remove Enzo from control of his organization.
But the plan had gone wrong.
The collision killed Enzo's driver and left Enzo with a spinal cord injury.
Matteo then assumed control of the household and restricted access to Enzo.
Investigators examined whether he had interfered with care decisions or used medical information to maintain influence.
Enzo was devastated.
Not only because of the betrayal.
Because he remembered the driver.
Luca Moretti.
Thirty-six.
Married.
Two children.
Luca had worked for Enzo for eleven years.
Enzo visited Luca's widow, Sofia.
He did not arrive with an entourage.
He brought his attorney and asked permission to speak.
Sofia listened as he explained the investigation.
Then she looked at him.
"Did you know?"
Enzo shook his head.
"No."
She studied him.
"Did your work put him in danger?"
Enzo swallowed.
"Yes."
Sofia's eyes filled.
"Then don't come here asking me to tell you it wasn't your fault."
Enzo lowered his head.
"I won't."
He offered financial support through a transparent legal arrangement.
Sofia accepted assistance for the children but refused anything that required silence.
Enzo agreed.
When he returned home, Wren found him in the garden.
He looked exhausted.
"She hates me."
Wren sat beside him.
"She has reasons to be angry."
Enzo nodded.
"I know."
Wren continued.
"You can't undo what happened. But you can decide what responsibility looks like now."
Enzo stared toward the trees.
For the first time, he began considering what leaving his criminal life would actually require.
Not a dramatic declaration.
A long process.
Legal consequences.

And the willingness to lose power.
