Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT DANTE CHOSE THE LAW OVER REVENGE

Dante received the doctor's cooperation notice on a Thursday morning.

Dr. Sampaio, through his attorney, had agreed to provide records and answer questions under the applicable legal process.

The information included communications from Vanessa and documents concerning the disputed medical summaries.

It was a breakthrough.

But not the one Dante had expected.

For years, he had handled betrayal in the language of his organization.

Threats.

Pressure.

Retaliation.

That was how men maintained power in the world he'd inherited.

Now the person he believed had endangered his life was a woman he'd intended to marry.

And her father had political allies capable of making the investigation extraordinarily difficult.

Dante looked at Rafael.

“Find me everything on Augusto Albuquerque.”

Rafael nodded.

Then Dante added, “Legally.”

The security chief stopped.

Dante stared at him.

“I mean it.”

Rafael slowly nodded.

“Understood.”

That afternoon, Beatriz met with Dante and the senior officers of his legal businesses.

She described the governance concerns, the ongoing investigation, and the need for independent oversight.

Several executives looked uneasy.

One man, Sérgio Barros, finally spoke.

“Dante, we've dealt with enemies before.”

Dante looked at him.

“Yes.”

“So why are we allowing attorneys and auditors to run everything?”

The room fell silent.

Dante leaned forward.

“Because my own fiancée almost obtained control of companies I didn't know she'd been negotiating over.”

Sérgio looked away.

Dante continued.

“Because I signed too many documents without reading them. Because I trusted people whose loyalty depended on money. And because I'm beginning to understand that fear is a terrible substitute for accountability.”

Rafael stared at him.

The words were almost unimaginable coming from Dante Montenegro.

Sérgio shifted in his chair.

“You're suggesting we change how the entire organization operates.”

Dante nodded.

“I am.”

The next several weeks were difficult.

Some executives cooperated.

Others resigned.

Independent reviews uncovered transactions that could not be reconciled with lawful business activity.

Beatriz warned Dante that cleaning up the companies could require admissions exposing him to criminal liability.

He listened.

Then authorized lawful disclosures and cooperation through counsel.

He understood that consequences would not disappear simply because he had almost been murdered.

But the alternative was returning to the same system that had made him vulnerable.

One night, I found him sitting alone on the terrace.

The city glowed beneath the dark sky.

His medical care had been transferred to an independent team, and he no longer needed a private nurse present throughout the day.

My assignment was ending.

He looked up when I approached.

“Marina.”

“Hello, Dante.”

He smiled.

“Not Nurse Oliveira?”

“I'm off duty.”

His expression changed.

He understood what that meant.

For weeks, we'd lived inside a complicated arrangement.

Patient and nurse.

Employer and employee.

Two people drawn together by an emergency neither had wanted.

Now the formal care relationship was ending.

I sat across from him.

“Your doctor is satisfied with your recovery plan.”

Dante nodded.

“And you're leaving?”

“My contract ends tomorrow.”

He looked down.

“Do you want to?”

I considered the question.

“I want my own life back.”

He nodded slowly.

“That's fair.”

I smiled.

“But I might also want to have dinner with someone who doesn't need his glucose checked every hour.”

Dante stared.

Then laughed.

“Really?”

“Don't look so surprised.”

He leaned forward.

“Marina Oliveira, would you allow me to take you to dinner?”

I pretended to consider.

“Will there be a fiancée with an insulin pen?”

His smile disappeared briefly.

Then returned.

“Absolutely not.”

“Armed guards at the table?”

“No.”

“Someone insulting me for being a nurse?”

His expression softened.

“Never.”

I smiled.

“Then yes.”

He looked at me for a long moment.

And when he reached for my hand, he stopped before touching it.

“May I?”

I nodded.

He took it gently.

For the first time, I wasn't holding his hand because I was checking a pulse.

I was holding it because I wanted to.

Two days later, Beatriz received confirmation of a major investigative development.

Financial records supported allegations that the rehabilitation center's proposed transfer was part of a broader scheme to redirect valuable charitable assets.

Messages connected the negotiations to Vanessa and individuals working for her father.

The authorities had begun taking formal action.

But the evidence also exposed something Dante hadn't expected.

The original commercial proposal had been discussed during his father's lifetime.

And one of the people who had supported it was a former Montenegro executive named Otávio Silveira.

Otávio had disappeared from Dante's inner circle years ago.

Now he was back in Brazil.

And he had been seen entering Augusto Albuquerque's residence.
