Chapter 8 - THE DAY MY FATHER STOPPED CALLING FEAR RESPECT

Mom's letter was inside the suitcase.

Dad had never opened it.

It was addressed to him.

Three years after her death, he finally did.

Not privately.

He asked us first.

“It might contain things about our marriage you don't want to hear.”

I said:

“That's your choice.”

He smiled faintly.

Apparently Eleanor had infected me.

He read it alone.

Then told us only what concerned us.

Caroline loved him.

That was true.

She was also afraid of what the organization was turning him into.

She wrote:

Our sons are learning that fear is respect because you keep showing them rooms where frightened men call you sir.

Dad stopped reading.

Nobody moved.

Then:

I do not want Declan inheriting a throne built from things he will spend the rest of his life pretending don't hurt him.

My throat tightened.

She named all four of us.

Roman needed room to fail without being called reckless.

Theo needed adults who asked twice when he said he was fine.

Jamie needed a father before he needed another guard.

And me?

Declan already thinks protecting people means becoming harder than whatever threatens them. Please teach him another way before somebody gets hurt.

Mason.

Police station.

Three years after death, my mother had still managed to call me out.

I laughed.

Then cried.

Dad did too.

That night he told us something else.

He had already begun selling off parts of the criminal organization.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Not because Eleanor asked.

Not because Mom's letter magically transformed him.

Because he'd spent three years discovering that the empire he'd refused to leave had not protected his family from pain.

It had taught all of us how to hide it.

“I won't pretend I can make our name clean overnight,” he said.

“But I can decide what you inherit.”

I looked at him.

“And what is that?”

For once Dad didn't say businesses.

Property.

Money.

He answered:

May you like

“A choice.”

That was the first inheritance he ever offered me that I actually wanted.
