Chapter 8 - SOFIA’S DECISION

After Renata’s confession, I offered Sofia compensation.

She refused the first offer.

Not because it was too small.

Because she believed I was trying to purchase forgiveness.

“I don’t want money for being framed.”

“It’s lost wages and harm.”

“You haven’t fired me.”

“You shouldn’t have to keep working here to prove you weren’t guilty.”

She stared.

Fair point.

We eventually handled it through an independent employment attorney.

Back pay.

Legal support.

Counseling assistance if she wanted it.

A compensation amount negotiated without requiring silence.

No nondisclosure clause about misconduct.

That mattered.

Then Sofia resigned anyway.

I hated that.

But I understood.

“This house scares Lucia now,” she said.

I looked toward the garden.

Pino and Lucia were lying in the grass.

Well, Pino was lying.

Lucia was using his ribs as a pillow.

“He doesn’t scare her.”

“No.”

Sofia smiled.

“You do less than before.”

Progress, apparently.

“What will you do?”

“My cousin manages a hotel in New Haven.”

“You have work?”

“She says yes.”

I nodded.

Then Sofia surprised me.

“I want Mateo’s case reopened properly.”

“It already is.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I don’t mean because you feel guilty.”

“I don’t control it.”

“Good.”

She looked at me.

“I want it outside your family.”

Exactly.

Independent workplace investigators and relevant authorities reviewed the historical accident.

Duca Maritime funded access to records and waived several procedural objections but did not control findings.

The final conclusion came months later.

Mateo’s death was classified as a preventable workplace fatality involving serious safety violations and subsequent concealment of material facts.

No evidence proved intentional homicide.

That mattered.

Truth did not need a murder twist.

The cover-up was bad enough.

The company reached a new settlement with the Alvarez family, including compensation for withheld information and workplace failures.

Sofia’s mother cried.

Not because money replaced Mateo.

Because for the first time the official record stopped calling his death a simple accident caused partly by worker error.

His name was cleared of that implication.

Sometimes dignity arrives decades late.

May you like

Still worth arriving.
