Chapter 10 - THE LITTLE GIRL WHO WOULDN'T CRY

The explosion had damaged the rear entrance.

Smoke poured through the hallway.

Officers shouted instructions.

I tried to run toward Lily's voice.

Vincent caught my arm.

"Elena, wait."

"She's down there!"

"I know."

"Let me go!"

He looked at me.

"If you run into the smoke, she could lose you too."

The words stopped me.

I hated him for being right.

Ruiz directed the rescue.

Firefighters arrived.

The building was evacuated.

Officers entered the basement through a service corridor.

Minutes passed.

Then more minutes.

I stood beside Vincent, trembling.

Sarah held my hand.

She was shaking too.

For fourteen years, she had lived inside Adrian's lies.

Now the truth was collapsing around her.

Suddenly, a firefighter emerged.

He carried a small child wrapped in a blanket.

Yellow socks.

Dark curls.

My knees nearly gave way.

"LILY!"

The firefighter lowered her.

She ran toward me.

"Mommy!"

I fell to my knees and caught her.

She wrapped her arms around my neck.

I held her so tightly she squeaked.

"I'm sorry, baby."

She buried her face against me.

"I was scared."

"I know."

"I wanted you."

"I'm here."

I kissed her hair.

Her cheeks.

Her tiny hands.

She looked up.

"Did I do something bad?"

My heart broke.

"No, sweetheart."

"Then why did Daddy take me?"

I closed my eyes.

Because Marcus had always believed love meant possession.

Because he couldn't tolerate losing control.

Because he had treated our daughter like something he owned.

But Lily was four.

She didn't need those answers.

She needed safety.

I held her closer.

"You didn't do anything wrong."

Vincent approached slowly.

Lily saw him.

"Mister Vincent!"

His face changed.

He knelt.

"Hello, little star."

She reached toward him.

He hugged her gently.

Then she pulled back.

"You're crying."

Vincent laughed through tears.

"Apparently."

She touched his cheek.

"Happy crying?"

He looked toward Sarah.

His daughter stood several feet away.

Watching.

Vincent swallowed.

"Yes."

Lily smiled.

"Then it's okay."

Ruiz approached.

"Marcus Velez is in custody."

I exhaled.

"And Adrian?"

Her expression tightened.

"He's missing."

Vincent stood.

The softness vanished from his face.

"Find him."

Ruiz nodded.

"We will."

Sarah stepped forward.

"Uncle Adrian has another property."

Everyone turned.

She looked frightened.

"He told me never to mention it."

Vincent approached.

"Where?"

Sarah swallowed.

"A cabin near Lake Geneva."

Ruiz immediately contacted investigators.

Within hours, officers located Adrian.

He attempted to flee.

But the roads were already blocked.

He was arrested without further violence.

When Vincent heard the news, he closed his eyes.

For fourteen years, he had imagined killing his brother.

Now he understood that revenge would not restore the years Adrian had stolen.

Only truth could begin that work.

He looked toward Lily.

She was asleep in my arms.

Then toward Sarah.

His daughter.

Alive.

He whispered:

"It's over."

But Sarah shook her head.

"No."

Vincent looked at her.

She swallowed.

"There's something you don't know."

His face tightened.

"What?"

Sarah's eyes filled.

"Uncle Adrian told me my mother didn't die in the bombing."

The world went silent.

Vincent stared.

"What did you say?"

May you like

Sarah whispered:

"He said Isabella survived."
