Chapter 15 - THE MAN WHO NO LONGER WANTED A THRONE

Z

A year after Isabella walked into the Park Avenue salon, Derek Russo resigned from several positions in the remaining family organization.

He retained lawful business interests that had survived independent review.

But the criminal operations that once defined the Russo empire were no longer something he intended to preserve.

The transition was difficult.

Some associates left.

Others cooperated with investigations.

Several companies closed.

Derek faced scrutiny concerning his own past conduct and accepted the legal obligations arising from it.

He stopped pretending that inheriting a system excused participating in it.

One evening, he met Isabella at a small restaurant near her apartment.

She arrived carrying textbooks.

He smiled.

“Homework?”

“Research.”

“About?”

“Community housing access.”

He nodded.

“Important.”

She studied him.

“Rough day?”

He laughed softly.

“Several.”

“What happened?”

“I closed another company.”

“Necessary?”

“Yes.”

She reached for his hand.

“Then I'm glad you did.”

Derek looked at her.

For years, he had been praised for making other people afraid.

Now the woman he loved was proud of him for choosing accountability.

The difference still startled him.

After dinner, they walked toward the river.

The city lights reflected off the dark water.

Derek stopped.

“Bella?”

She turned.

“Yes?”

“I love you.”

The words arrived quietly.

Without a speech.

Without an expectation.

Isabella stared.

For a moment, she couldn't speak.

Then her eyes filled.

“Derek.”

He smiled sadly.

“You don't have to say it back.”

She looked at him.

“I know.”

He nodded.

“I just wanted you to know.”

She stepped closer.

Then whispered, “I love you too.”

His expression changed.

“Really?”

She laughed through her tears.

“Yes.”

He looked almost stunned.

The man once called the king of New York's waterfront seemed incapable of believing someone could love him without fear or obligation.

Isabella smiled.

Then kissed him.

It was their first kiss.

Gentle.

Unhurried.

And chosen freely.

Later that evening, Derek walked her home.

He stopped at the door.

“Good night, Bella.”

She smiled.

“Good night.”

Then she paused.

“Derek?”

“Yes?”

“Thank you.”

He frowned.

“For what?”

“For not trying to turn my life into something you own.”

His expression softened.

“I don't want to.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

Then she stepped inside.

Derek remained outside for a moment.

Looking at the ordinary apartment door.

He had owned mansions.

Hotels.

Warehouses.

Entire blocks of waterfront property.

But that small doorway represented something more valuable than any of them.

A woman had invited him into her life.

Not because he was powerful.

May you like

Because she trusted him.

And he intended to spend the rest of his life deserving that trust.
