Chapter 4 - THE FIANCÉE WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

I confronted Vanessa the next morning.
She entered my suite carrying fresh flowers.
White lilies.
My least favorite.
She placed them on the table.
“Darling, you look better.”
I watched her.
“Where were you the night of the explosion?”
She blinked.
“At home.”
“Alone?”
Her smile weakened.
“Why?”
“Answer.”
She crossed her arms.
“My father was with me.”
I nodded.
“Interesting.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“What is?”
“Luca says your father was at Warehouse Seventeen.”
Silence.
Vanessa looked away.
“That doesn't mean anything.”
I leaned forward.
“Why was he there?”
She sighed.
“Dominic, you're recovering from serious injuries. You shouldn't be interrogating people.”
I felt anger rise.
Then forced it down.
“Did you know Leo was alive?”
Her face changed.
“Who?”
“My nephew.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“I didn't know he was your nephew.”
I watched her.
“You recognized him.”
“No.”
“Grace saw you.”
Her expression hardened.
“That nurse is manipulating you.”
I said nothing.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Dominic, she's a nobody.”
My jaw tightened.
“Be careful.”
She stared.
“What?”
“About how you speak of her.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Unbelievable.”
I looked at her.
“Where is Sofia?”
Her face drained.
“Who?”
I held her gaze.
“Matteo's wife.”
Vanessa looked toward the door.
Then whispered:
“Dominic, some questions are better left unanswered.”
My blood went cold.
“Is that a threat?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
May you like
But she wouldn't meet my eyes.
And I knew she was lying.
