Chapter 6 - PETER’S LAST LIE

Peter’s deposition lasted seven hours.
By the end, the entire family mythology had changed.
He admitted suppressing Julian’s paternity test.
Admitted threatening Claire Vale.
Admitted directing Enzo Bellini to draft the payoff.
Admitted destroying Salvatore’s estate records.
Then Luca’s attorney asked:
“Why?”
Peter gave the answer everyone expected.
“To protect Luca.”
Julian laughed from across the room.
Luca did not.
Naomi leaned forward.
“Protect him from what?”
“Division.”
“What division?”
“The family company.”
“Mr. Moretti, did you personally hold voting authority if Salvatore died with only one recognized son?”
Peter stopped.
There it was.
Under Salvatore’s old governance documents, Peter served as temporary trustee if Luca remained sole heir until age thirty-five.
Luca had been twenty-eight.
If Julian became recognized immediately, the temporary-trust arrangement ended.
Peter would lose control.
He had not protected Luca.
He protected himself.
Seven years of voting power.
Board influence.
Management fees.
Contract approvals.
Millions.
Luca stared at the uncle who had taught him to shave.
Taken him to baseball games.
Helped him bury his father.
Peter looked back.
“Everything I did kept the company stable.”
Luca’s voice was quiet.
“Everything you did made you necessary.”
Peter’s face hardened.
“You benefited.”
“Yes.”
That answer surprised him.
Luca continued:
“I benefited from something I did not understand.”
“You think giving Julian money changes that?”
“No.”
“What then?”
“Nothing changes it.”
Silence.
“I can only stop continuing it.”
Peter looked almost disgusted.
“You sound like a priest.”
“No.”
Luca looked at his uncle.
“I sound like a man who finally read the documents.”
The trust case settled.
Julian received the assets Salvatore intended, plus historical distributions adjusted by independent accounting.
Luca did not contest.
The legitimate Moretti holdings were restructured.
Julian received board representation.
No criminal operations.
No inherited “family obligations.”
His lawyer insisted.
So did he.
Peter lost trustee compensation and faced civil liability for fraud and coercion.
Criminal charges involving old estate misconduct were more complicated due to time limitations, but financial penalties destroyed much of the fortune he had built through control.
He moved permanently to Italy.
Before leaving, he asked Luca for one final meeting.
Luca refused.
Peter sent a letter.
Luca did not open it for three months.
When he finally did, there was no apology.
Only justification.
One day you will understand that families survive because someone makes the hard decisions.
Luca folded the letter.
Then placed it in a file labeled:
THINGS I WILL NOT INHERIT.
Robert found the label hilarious.
Julian did too.
The brothers were still awkward.
But they were brothers now.
Not because paper made them so.
May you like
Because they started choosing to remain in the same room after the lawyers left.
