Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO STOPPED APOLOGIZING
Adeline returned to conservation work.
Slowly.
Carefully.
She rebuilt professional relationships.
Completed training.
Took on small projects.
Then larger ones.
Her reputation began to recover.
The allegations against her were discredited as evidence emerged from the investigation.
Daniel's role in the forged records became clearer.
And Adeline's original concerns were vindicated.
But success did not erase everything.
She still woke some mornings afraid.
Still hesitated before entering expensive buildings.
Still apologized when she didn't need to.
One afternoon, Enzo found her standing outside a museum.
She looked nervous.
"What's wrong?"
She smiled faintly.
"I have a meeting."
He nodded.
"Good."
She looked down.
"I don't know if I belong here."
Enzo studied her.
Then said:
"Adeline, you were invited because you're qualified."
She swallowed.
"I know."
He smiled.
"Then go remind them."
She laughed softly.
Then entered.
That evening, she returned smiling.
The museum had offered her a contract.
A real one.
With fair pay.
Professional recognition.
And a chance to work on historical documents again.
Enzo listened as she told him.
Her eyes shone.
Her voice grew animated.
For the first time, he saw the woman she had been before everything collapsed.
He smiled.
"I'm proud of you."
Adeline looked at him.
Then whispered:
"Thank you for believing me."
He shook his head.
"You gave me reasons to."
Their friendship deepened.
They shared meals.
Walked through Federal Hill.
Visited Brennan's.
Talked about books.
Art.
Family.
And the lives they might have lived if things had been different.
One evening, Adeline asked:
"Why did you help me?"
Enzo looked toward the river.
"Because I saw someone do the right thing when nobody was watching."
She smiled faintly.
"And?"
He turned toward her.
May you like
"And because I wanted to know the woman who could do that."
Adeline's heart began to race.
