Chapter 12 - THE TRIAL OF THE WOMAN IN WHITE

The legal proceedings against people involved in the foundation's financial misconduct unfolded over time.
Victor Sloane entered into a cooperation agreement.
Records and testimony supported allegations of improper transfers, undisclosed conflicts, and false representations concerning charitable funds.
Beatrice Vane faced serious legal consequences arising from the investigation.
She denied intentionally misusing donations.
Her attorneys argued that financial decisions had been made by outside advisers.
But the evidence included communications showing her involvement in key arrangements.
Senator Vane's conduct was also scrutinized.
The extent of his knowledge and responsibility remained a separate legal question.
For Isabella, the process was painful.
She had once considered Beatrice a friend.
They'd attended charity events together.
Shared dinners.
Spoken about Lucia.
One afternoon, Isabella sat beside me in the garden.
“I trusted her.”
I nodded.
“I know.”
“She knew why the foundation mattered.”
Her voice broke.
“She knew about my daughter.”
I took her hand.
Isabella looked toward the roses.
“Do you think I'm foolish?”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“Why?”
“Because trusting someone isn't foolish. Betraying that trust is.”
She began crying.
I hugged her.
Later, Lorenzo joined us.
He sat beside his mother.
For a while, nobody spoke.
Then Isabella whispered:
“I don't want revenge.”
Lorenzo nodded.
“What do you want?”
She looked at him.
“I want the children to get their money.”
He smiled sadly.
“Then that's what we'll keep working toward.”
Months later, the foundation announced that substantial assets had been recovered or secured through legal proceedings and settlements, subject to the applicable claims process.
A portion of the recovered funds was allocated to reviewing previously approved assistance that had never been paid.
The sapphire necklace was also recovered through a negotiated legal resolution addressing its disputed sale.
Lorenzo brought it home in a small velvet box.
Isabella opened it.
Her hands trembled.
For a long moment, she simply stared.
Then she touched the blue stone.
“Lucia.”
Lorenzo knelt beside her.
She began crying.
He held her.
I stood quietly near the doorway.
Because some moments don't need witnesses.
They need privacy.
That evening, Isabella placed the necklace beside Lucia's photograph.
Then she turned toward me.
“Sophie.”
“Yes?”
May you like
She smiled through tears.
“Thank you for helping us bring her home.”
