Chapter 11 - THE BLUE HERON

The mural stood on the side of an abandoned warehouse near the Chicago River.
A blue heron spread its wings across faded brick.
Dileia remembered standing beneath it on her first date with Tommy.
He had taken her photograph.
She had complained that the wind ruined her hair.
He had told her she looked beautiful anyway.
Now she stood in the same place with Rachel, a licensed investigator, and two officers.
Julian waited nearby.
He had offered to accompany her.
She agreed on one condition.
"No weapons. No intimidation. No secret decisions."
He accepted.
The warehouse had been purchased by a redevelopment company three years earlier.
Rachel obtained permission to inspect the property.
Dileia walked toward the mural.
She studied the bricks.
The painted feathers.
The faded blue lines.
Then she remembered something.
Tommy had once told her the heron looked like it was guarding a secret.
She had laughed.
Now she wasn't laughing.
She examined the wall.
Near the bird's wing, one brick looked different.
Slightly newer.
The mortar uneven.
She pointed.
"There."
The investigator inspected it.
Then carefully removed the loose brick.
Behind it was a waterproof metal container.
Dileia stopped breathing.
Inside lay a small external drive.
And a handwritten note.
FOR DILEIA. TRUST THE NUMBERS.
She covered her mouth.
Tommy had known she would understand.
Even when everyone else dismissed her education.
Even when she doubted herself.
He had believed in her.
Rachel secured the drive for forensic examination.
The data was encrypted.
But Tommy had left a clue.
A date.
The day he proposed.
Dileia entered it.
The drive opened.
Inside were maintenance logs.
Internal emails.
Photographs.
Payment records.
And a video statement.
Tommy appeared on the screen.
Alive.
Smiling nervously.
Dileia felt her knees weaken.
"Hey, Dee."
His voice filled the room.
She began crying.
"If you're watching this, I probably didn't manage to fix things the way I hoped."
He paused.
"I need you to know I tried."
Dileia pressed her hand against her mouth.
Tommy continued.
"I found proof that Adrian Thorne and Martin Voss were using shipping facilities to move illegal cargo. When workers noticed, they were threatened."
He looked down.
"Some accidents weren't accidents."
Dileia closed her eyes.
Then Tommy said something that changed everything.
"Julian Thorne doesn't know."
Julian went still.
Tommy continued.
"I checked. The approvals were forged. Someone has been using his name and executive authority."
Julian stared at the screen.
Dileia looked toward him.
His face had gone pale.
Tommy continued.
"If anything happens to me, give this to someone who can protect the workers."
He paused.
Then smiled sadly.
"And Dee?"
Dileia sobbed.
"I love you. You were always the smartest person in every room. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise."
The video ended.
Silence filled the warehouse.
Dileia stood motionless.
Then Julian approached.
He didn't touch her.
He simply waited.
She turned toward him.
"He knew."
Julian nodded.
"He knew you could find it."
Dileia looked at the drive.
Tommy had left her more than evidence.
May you like
He had left her trust.
And now she knew what she had to do with it.
