Chapter 12 - THE LITTLE GIRL WHO CALLED HIM UNCLE

Sophia moved into a carefully supervised family placement while the courts reviewed her long-term guardianship.
Gabriel visited regularly.
He never demanded affection.
He never asked her to forget the people who had raised her.
He simply showed up.
Week after week.
Sometimes they played chess.
Sometimes they drew pictures.
Sometimes Sophia sat beside him and asked questions about her father.
One Saturday afternoon, I joined them in the garden.
Sophia was drawing a picture of a house.
Gabriel sat beside her.
"Who's that?" he asked.
She pointed.
"Me."
"And that?"
"You."
He smiled.
"And the third person?"
Sophia looked at me.
"Matilda."
I froze.
Gabriel looked up.
Sophia continued drawing.
"She's the lady who saved you."
I knelt beside her.
"Your uncle had a lot of people helping him."
Sophia considered.
Then said, "But you stayed."
My eyes filled.
Gabriel looked away.
Later, Sophia asked whether I would teach her to bake cookies.
I agreed.
The kitchen became a disaster.
Flour covered the counter.
Chocolate chips rolled beneath the refrigerator.
Sophia laughed so hard she dropped a spoon.
Gabriel appeared in the doorway.
"What happened here?"
Sophia grinned.
"Science."
I laughed.
Gabriel studied the mess.
Then rolled up his sleeves.
"Do you need help?"
Sophia nodded.
"Yes."
He approached the counter.
I handed him an apron.
He stared.
It was pink.
With yellow ducks.
Sophia giggled.
Gabriel sighed.
Then put it on.
I watched Chicago's most feared former mafia boss standing in a kitchen, wearing a duck apron and measuring flour with a nine-year-old girl.

And I realized something.
The man who had once controlled an empire was finally learning how to build a home.
