Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN VINCENT WANTED SILENCED

Her name was Evelyn Price.
She was forty-two, a surgical nurse who had worked at Vale Surgical Center for six years.
When investigators located her, she was staying with her sister in Wisconsin.
She had left Chicago the day Gabriel developed his fever.
Not because she'd done anything wrong.
Because somebody had warned her that asking questions could cost her life.
I learned about Evelyn when Rebecca contacted me about a formal witness interview.
I didn't attend the interview itself.
I wasn't an investigator.
But the information eventually provided to Gabriel's representatives changed our understanding of everything that happened inside the clinic.
According to Evelyn, Gabriel's first procedure was straightforward.
Dr. Adrian Vale examined the gunshot injury, addressed wound complications, and arranged postoperative care.
Gabriel was sedated.
The surgical team completed the procedure.
Then Vincent arrived.
He asked to speak privately with Dr. Vale.
Thirty minutes later, a second medical team entered through the rear entrance.
Evelyn didn't recognize either physician.
She questioned why additional equipment was being brought into an operating room without a new documented procedure.
Vincent told her it was a private family matter.
Dr. Vale appeared visibly distressed.
Then Evelyn was instructed to leave.
She refused.
A security guard escorted her out.
When she returned the following morning, Gabriel had already been transferred to the penthouse.
And the official chart contained only one procedure.
Evelyn had made a written note that night.
She documented the additional personnel, the approximate times, and her concerns about the missing authorization.
Then she copied the record and gave it to her attorney.
Three days later, her car was vandalized.
A week after that, someone threatened her sister.
She left Chicago.
I listened to Rebecca describe the statement.
Then asked, “Why didn't she report it sooner?”
“She tried. Her initial complaint never reached the hospital's independent review office.”
I frowned.
“Who intercepted it?”
“That remains under investigation.”
I looked away.
I understood how easily people could be silenced when powerful individuals controlled their employment.
A nurse could lose her license.
Her income.
Her reputation.
Her ability to care for her family.
Sometimes, the threat didn't need to be spoken.
Everyone already understood it.
That evening, I visited my mother.
She was sitting in the recreation room folding napkins.
When she saw me, she smiled.
“Claire.”
I almost cried.
She had remembered my name.
I sat beside her.
“Hi, Mom.”
She examined my face.
“You look worried.”
“I am.”
She picked up a napkin.
Folded it carefully.
Then said, “Your father used to worry about every patient he couldn't save.”
I smiled sadly.
“He wasn't a doctor.”
“No,” she said. “But he was an honest man.”
Her eyes drifted toward the window.
“He used to tell me that doing the right thing doesn't guarantee an easy life.”
I looked at her.
For one brief moment, she seemed entirely present.
Then she added, “But it gives you a life you can recognize.”
I squeezed her hand.
The next morning, Evelyn's evidence led investigators to a second name.
Dr. Martin Kessler.
A physician whose medical privileges had previously been restricted following serious professional complaints.
He was not employed by Vale Surgical Center.
Yet security footage showed him entering the building shortly before the unexplained procedure.
The recording also showed Vincent meeting him outside.
Twenty minutes later, both men entered the operating suite.
Kessler's involvement raised more questions than it answered.
Why had Vincent brought an unauthorized physician into his cousin's surgery?
What procedure had been performed?
And where was Dr. Adrian Vale?
At six that evening, Luca received a message from an unfamiliar number.
It contained a short video.
Dr. Vale appeared seated in a dim room.
His face was bruised.
His hands trembled.
He looked directly into the camera.
Then spoke one sentence.
“I didn't put it there.”
The recording ended.
Luca stared at the screen.
Beside him, Gabriel had gone completely still.
Then Gabriel whispered, “Put what where?”
May you like
No one answered.
Because every person in that room was thinking about the hidden scar.
