Chapter 12 - THE LAST LIE VANESSA TOLD

Z

Vanessa Bellini was arrested six weeks after the canceled wedding.

Charles Whitmore was taken into custody two days earlier.

The charges involved alleged fraud, forgery, conspiracy, and other offenses connected to the financial scheme.

The investigations were complicated.

Some allegations remained unresolved.

Others were supported by extensive documentary evidence.

I gave a statement about the assault in the bridal suite.

Dr. Harris provided medical records documenting my injuries.

David Collins and Celeste Ward supplied evidence about the staged photographs.

Rebecca helped me obtain independent legal representation.

I was nervous throughout the process.

Not because I doubted what happened.

Because I'd spent most of my life trying not to attract attention.

Now people were asking me to describe everything.

The bruises.

The threats.

The fear.

The way Vanessa had grabbed my arm and told me to forget what I'd heard.

I told the truth.

Even when my voice shook.

During one hearing, Vanessa looked directly at me.

She wore a cream-colored suit.

Her hair was perfectly styled.

She looked exactly like the woman who'd humiliated me at dinner.

For a moment, I felt twenty-four guests watching again.

Then Vanessa smiled.

A small, cruel smile.

As though she still believed I was beneath her.

I looked away.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I no longer needed her approval.

Later, I learned Vanessa had tried to claim I was lying because I wanted money from Luca.

My attorney addressed the allegation through the appropriate legal process.

The medical evidence, contemporaneous messages, and witness accounts supported my description of the injury.

The forged statements were examined separately.

The truth wasn't decided by who had the most expensive clothes.

That was something I had once believed impossible.

Months later, Vanessa and Whitmore faced the consequences of the charges proved against them.

The criminal proceedings continued through the courts.

I didn't attend every hearing.

I had a life to rebuild.

Daniel had therapy.

I had my own recovery.

And I had begun applying for jobs outside the Moretti mansion.

That decision frightened me.

For ten months, the mansion had been my financial lifeline.

Leaving meant uncertainty.

But staying would mean returning to a place where I'd learned to swallow fear.

One evening, Luca called.

“Anna, I heard you're looking for another position.”

I hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Is it because of what happened?”

“Partly.”

He was silent.

Then:

“I understand.”

I waited.

He continued.

“Would you like a reference?”

I closed my eyes.

“Yes.”

“Then you'll have an honest one.”

I smiled.

“Thank you.”

He paused.

“And Anna?”

“Yes?”

“You were never just a maid.”

My throat tightened.

I looked toward Daniel's room.

Then whispered:

May you like

“I know that now.”
