Chapter 3 - THE RED MUSIC BOX

Sarah did not move into Julian Morty’s mansion.

That was the first rumor Gary later tried to spread.

It was false.

She accepted a formal position three weeks later as family childcare coordinator through Morty Residential Services.

Forty hours a week.

Salary nearly double what her three jobs combined paid.

Benefits.

Predictable schedule.

No requirement to live on-site.

Sarah’s own lawyer reviewed every page.

The lawyer came through a nonprofit family-law clinic Sarah found herself.

Julian paid nothing toward her custody case.

That boundary mattered.

Her first week began with Matteo.

The second began with the red music box.

Julian waited until only Sarah and his longtime security director, Gabriel Russo, were in the nursery.

The room had been left nearly unchanged since Isabella’s death.

Soft cream walls.

Dark wood crib.

Books.

A shelf of stuffed animals.

And on a high cabinet—

a small red lacquered music box shaped like a carousel.

Julian stared at it.

“I’ve seen this every day.”

Sarah whispered:

“Bella said it knew more than anyone in the house.”

Gabriel examined it without damaging anything.

No obvious hidden compartment.

Then Sarah noticed one horse on the carousel was facing backward.

She remembered Bella’s hands.

Always turning things when nervous.

Sarah rotated the horse.

Click.

A false bottom released.

Inside was a tiny encrypted memory card.

Julian sat down.

For perhaps the first time in his adult life, he looked physically unsteady.

Gabriel said:

“We do this properly.”

Julian nodded.

The card went to independent forensic counsel.

Not Julian’s internal “people.”

Not some backroom hacker.

A licensed digital-forensics firm working through outside attorneys.

Three days later, they had an answer.

Videos.

Bank records.

Voice notes.

And a message from Isabella.

Julian watched it alone first.

Then asked Sarah to sit with him.

Bella appeared on-screen holding newborn Matteo.

She looked exactly as Sarah remembered.

Tired.

Afraid.

Alive.

Julian, if you’re watching this, I either finally became brave enough to show you or something happened before I could.

Julian closed his eyes.

Isabella continued.

For months, she had suspected Victor Morty, Julian’s uncle and longtime adviser, was using legitimate Morty logistics companies to conceal payments connected to illegal legacy operations Julian believed had already been shut down.

Julian’s father had supposedly severed those activities.

Victor had restarted pieces quietly.

Isabella discovered it because she managed charitable accounts linked to the family foundation.

Invoices did not match.

Donations went to shell organizations.

Money came back through transportation vendors.

She began copying documents.

Then somebody entered the nursery while she was asleep.

Nothing stolen.

Just moved.

A warning.

Bella told no one because she did not know whom to trust.

Then the video became worse.

Julian, I think someone close to you knows I found the accounts.

And if anything happens to me, do not become the man they expect you to become.

Julian stared at the screen.

Sarah understood what she meant.

Do not start a war.

Do not kill people.

Do not let grief return the family to its oldest habits.

Isabella’s final words:

Protect Matteo by making his last name less frightening than the one we inherited.

The screen went black.

Julian did not speak for five minutes.

Then:

“My uncle arranged her car maintenance.”

Gabriel looked at him.

“That is not proof.”

Julian nodded.

“I know.”

That answer mattered.

The investigation began.

Quietly.

Outside counsel.

Forensic accountants.

Eventually federal investigators, because some of the financial records suggested crimes crossing jurisdictions.

Julian cooperated.

Even though doing so meant exposing parts of his own family’s history.

Sarah watched him sign the authorization.

His hand shook once.

May you like

Then stopped.
