Chapter 11 - THE PRICE OF A BROTHER'S LIFE

Lorenzo's final move wasn't an ambush.
It was an attempt to turn the brothers against each other.
He released a series of documents claiming Mateo had personally approved illegal transfers during the final months before his disappearance.
Some records were authentic.
Others had been altered.
But enough were plausible to create serious questions.
Reporters began calling.
Business partners demanded explanations.
Several former associates threatened civil action.
Mateo was furious.
Dominic was silent.
Vivien watched the two men stand across from each other in the penthouse study.
"Tell me what happened," Dominic said.
Mateo folded his arms.
"I've already told investigators."
"I'm asking you."
Mateo stared.
"You don't trust me?"
Dominic took a breath.
"I trust you enough to ask."
Mateo looked away.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then Mateo said, "I approved some transfers."
Dominic closed his eyes.
"Why?"
"Because I was trying to document the flow of money before turning the evidence over."
"Did you profit?"
"No."
"Can you prove that?"
Mateo's expression hardened.
"I've given investigators every record I have."
Dominic nodded.
"Then that's what matters."
Mateo blinked.
"What?"
"We let the evidence establish what happened."
He looked at his brother.
"I'm not going to choose loyalty over truth again."
For several seconds, Mateo didn't move.
Then he nodded.
"Good."
It wasn't a warm moment.
But it was honest.
And for the Russo brothers, honesty was becoming something more valuable than unquestioned allegiance.
Lorenzo's next message came to Vivien.
Not Dominic.
A photograph appeared on her phone.
It showed the exterior of her gallery.
Taken that morning.
Below it were four words.
YOUR MOTHER CHOSE WRONG.
Vivien stared at the screen.
Then forwarded it to Detective Ellison.
She didn't hide it.
Didn't confront Lorenzo.
Didn't rush into danger to prove she was brave.
She documented it.
Called Ada.
Confirmed the gallery's security procedures.
And followed the investigators' recommendations.
When Dominic heard, he came to her office.
His face looked exhausted.
"Vivien."
She stood.
"I'm okay."
He looked around.
"Are you sure?"
"No."
The honesty stopped him.
She continued.
"I'm frightened. I'm angry. And I'm tired of people threatening me because I did my job."
Dominic nodded.
"So am I."
Vivien took a breath.
"But I'm not going to disappear from my own life."
His expression softened.
"I know."
She stepped closer.
"And I need you to promise something."
"Anything."
"Don't go after Lorenzo yourself."
Dominic looked away.
She waited.
"Dom."
He looked at her.
"I mean it."
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then he nodded.
"I promise."
Vivien exhaled.
He took her hand.
"I'm not losing you to the same kind of decisions that destroyed my family."
Her eyes filled.
"Then we're learning."
He smiled sadly.
"Apparently."
Three nights later, investigators located Lorenzo at an isolated property in northern Illinois.
A lawful operation was organized to take him into custody.
Dominic was not involved.
Mateo was not involved.
Vivien learned about the arrest the following morning.
Detective Ellison called at 6:12.
"Lorenzo Costa is in custody."
Vivien sat up.
"What?"
"He's being held pending proceedings."
Her heart pounded.
"Was anyone hurt?"
"No serious injuries were reported during the arrest."
Vivien closed her eyes.
"Thank God."
Dominic appeared in the bedroom doorway.
"What happened?"
She looked at him.
Tears filled her eyes.
"They found him."
He froze.
"Lorenzo?"
She nodded.
"He's been arrested."
For several seconds, Dominic didn't move.
Then he sat on the edge of the bed.
He covered his face.
Vivien moved beside him.
He began crying.
Not because he wanted Lorenzo back.
Because nineteen years of trust had collapsed into something he could finally name.
Betrayal.
The man who had advised him after his father's death.
The man who had stood beside Mateo at countless family dinners.
The man who had convinced Dominic that loyalty required silence.
Had allegedly spent years manipulating the very people he claimed to protect.
Dominic looked up.
"I let him make decisions for me."
Vivien nodded.
"I know."
"I believed him."
"I know."
His voice broke.
"And my brother nearly died."
Vivien took his hand.
"You can acknowledge that without taking responsibility for every crime Lorenzo committed."
Dominic closed his eyes.
"I wish I'd listened sooner."
She leaned against him.
"So do I."
For a while, they sat quietly.
Then Dominic looked at her.
"Are you going to stay?"
Vivien smiled sadly.
"Tonight?"
"Beyond tonight."
She studied him.
"That depends."
His expression tightened.
"On what?"
"Whether you keep building a life where I can stand beside you as an equal."
Dominic nodded.
"I will."
Vivien leaned forward.
"Then yes."
He closed his eyes.
And for the first time in months, the word yes didn't sound like a promise extracted under pressure.
It sounded like a choice.
The legal proceedings against Lorenzo would take time.
There would be hearings.
Witnesses.
Expert testimony.
Challenges to old records.
No one could promise a perfect conclusion.
But the threats had stopped.
The suspicious companies were under scrutiny.
The evidence Eleanor and Mateo had protected was finally being examined.

And Dominic Russo was no longer pretending that control was the same as safety.
For the first time, he was ready to let the law do work he once believed only men like him could accomplish.
