Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO LIVE AGAIN

A year later, Massimo had transformed much of his life.
He still used his wheelchair.
Sometimes he used other mobility aids during therapy.
His medical team continued working with him on functional goals.
But he no longer treated walking as the only acceptable outcome.
He traveled.
Cooked.
Worked.
Laughed.
And spent time with people who didn't fear him.
The Pascale businesses had undergone major restructuring.
Massimo had cooperated with authorities and withdrawn from the criminal operations that had once defined his reputation.
Some legal consequences remained.
He accepted them.
He also continued supporting Sofia's culinary scholarship.
The first group of students graduated that spring.
Massimo invited me to the ceremony.
I watched him speak from the stage.
"My sister believed everyone deserved a chance to build a life they loved."
His voice trembled.
"She didn't get the future she wanted."
He paused.
"But today, because of her, five young people are beginning theirs."
The room erupted in applause.
I cried.
Massimo looked toward me.
And smiled.
That evening, he asked me to join him in the garden.
The roses were blooming.
The air smelled of rain.
He looked unusually nervous.
"Tessa."
I smiled.
"Yes?"
"I've been thinking."
"That sounds dangerous."
He laughed.
"Very."
He reached into his jacket.
My heart stopped.
A small velvet box.
He opened it.
Inside was a ring.
Simple.
Elegant.
Beautiful.
I stared.
"Massimo."
He swallowed.
"I know this is sudden."
I laughed through tears.
"Not exactly."
He smiled.
He looked at me.
"When you walked into my house, I thought strength meant making everyone obey."
His voice broke.
"You taught me that strength can mean listening."
My eyes filled.
"You taught me that needing help doesn't make a person less worthy."
He swallowed.
"And you showed me that love doesn't have to be another kind of control."
I covered my mouth.
He held out the ring.
"Tessa Fitzgerald."
His eyes shone.
"Will you marry me?"
I began crying.
He smiled nervously.
"That's not an answer."
I laughed.
"Yes."
His expression changed.
"Yes?"
I nodded.
"Yes, Massimo."
He pulled me into his arms.
May you like
I kissed him.
And for the first time, the future felt like something we could build together without either of us having to disappear inside the other.
