Chapter 5 - THE MAN BEHIND THE WINDOW

The first photograph arrived that afternoon.

It was slipped beneath the door of our guest suite.

No envelope.

No message.

Just a photograph.

Miguel stood beside a shipping container.

He wore a gray work jacket.

His hair was longer than I remembered.

A scar crossed his left cheek.

But it was him.

Alive.

The photograph was dated three months earlier.

I stared until my vision blurred.

Then I ran to Dante's study.

"He's alive."

Dante stood.

I placed the photograph on his desk.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he reached for his phone.

A forensic review confirmed that the image had not been obviously manipulated.

The date could not be independently verified.

But the man's facial features matched Miguel's old photographs.

Dante looked at me.

"I think it's him."

I covered my mouth.

Three years.

Three birthdays.

Three Christmases.

Three years of Sophie asking why her father couldn't come home.

And somewhere, Miguel had been alive.

My grief changed shape.

It became anger.

"Why didn't he come back?"

Dante didn't answer.

"Why didn't he call?"

Silence.

"Why did he let us think he was dead?"

My voice broke.

"Why?"

Dante looked at the photograph.

"I don't know."

That evening, another message arrived.

DON'T TRUST MARCUS.

I stared.

Then showed Dante.

His expression hardened.

Marcus Hale had been his security chief for four years.

He controlled the estate's cameras.

Guard rotations.

Vehicle access.

And the old service tunnels.

If Marcus was involved, he could have hidden almost anything.

Dante quietly arranged for an independent security review.

He didn't confront Marcus.

Not yet.

Instead, he asked a trusted attorney to coordinate with investigators.

The evidence began to accumulate.

Unauthorized access logs.

Deleted camera footage.

Payments from Victor Salcedo.

And suspicious movements near the old boathouse.

At midnight, Dante entered my guest suite.

I was sitting beside Sophie's bed.

Bruno slept near the door.

Dante looked at me.

"We found something."

My heart hammered.

"What?"

He held out a small object.

A silver wedding band.

Inside were engraved words.

I + M. ALWAYS.

My knees weakened.

Miguel's ring.

The one I'd placed on his finger when we married.

Dante swallowed.

"It was found inside the tunnel."

I stared.

Then whispered:

"He was here."

Dante nodded.

"Yes."

At that moment, Bruno lifted his head.

His ears turned toward the hallway.

Then he growled.

A low sound.

Warning.

Dante stepped toward the door.

May you like

But before he could reach it, the lights went out.

And from somewhere inside the walls came three slow knocks.
