Chapter 14 - THE LOVE I NEVER EXPECTED

Spring arrived slowly in Boston.

The trees along the river turned green.

The institute prepared to publish our findings.

And my life settled into a rhythm I loved.

Work.

Friends.

Coffee.

Long walks.

Occasional dinners with Noah.

At first, I insisted we were just colleagues.

He agreed.

Then we became friends.

He learned that I hated olives.

That I loved thunderstorms.

That I sometimes woke at three in the morning to write down equations.

I learned that he played terrible jazz piano.

That he called his grandmother every Sunday.

That he had once failed an important exam and considered leaving science altogether.

He never made me feel foolish for the years I'd lost.

He never asked me to explain why I'd stayed with Adrian.

And he never treated my independence as a threat.

One evening, we walked beside the river after dinner.

The sky was turning purple.

Noah stopped near a bench.

“Claire?”

I looked at him.

“Yes?”

He smiled nervously.

“Can I ask you something?”

I laughed.

“You sound terrified.”

“I am.”

I smiled.

“Go ahead.”

He took a breath.

“Would you like to go on a date with me?”

I stared.

“A date?”

He nodded.

“A real one. Not a research meeting disguised as dinner.”

I laughed.

He smiled.

“No pressure.”

I looked toward the river.

For a moment, I thought of Adrian.

The marriage.

The pain.

The woman I'd been.

Then I looked back at Noah.

“I'm not looking for someone to rescue me.”

He nodded.

“Good.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Good?”

He smiled.

“I wasn't planning to.”

My heart softened.

I continued.

“My work matters to me.”

“I know.”

“I may travel.”

“I know.”

“I won't give up my career for a relationship again.”

Noah smiled.

“Claire, I fell for you while watching you argue with a graph.”

I burst out laughing.

He continued.

“Your mind is one of my favorite things about you.”

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then I smiled.

“Yes.”

His eyes widened.

“Yes?”

“I'd like to go on a date.”

He grinned.

“Excellent.”

May you like

We walked toward the city.

And for the first time, I felt ready to love someone without disappearing inside the relationship.
