Chapter 5 - MIDNIGHT AT THE HOSPITAL
Gabriel wanted Jonathan dragged out.
Emma convinced him to wait.
Again.
It was becoming irritating.
They watched.
Jonathan met Dr. Peter Lang, Lily's neurologist.
The conversation lasted eighteen minutes.
When Lang left, Marco followed.
Gabriel confronted Jonathan.
No guards visible.
No shouting.
Just two men in an empty hospital conference room.
“You killed Alessandra.”
Jonathan closed his eyes.
“No.”
“You paid the mechanic.”
“Yes.”
Gabriel's hand closed around his throat.
Jonathan didn't resist.
“I paid him because Alessandra asked me to.”
Gabriel stopped.
“What?”
“She knew someone tampered with the car.”
“Before the crash?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did she drive it?”
“She didn't know which car.”
Gabriel released him.
Jonathan coughed.
The truth became stranger.
Jonathan had not engineered the trust amendment.
He had accepted trusteeship because Alessandra asked him to.
She suspected someone inside Bellacosta was manipulating Lily's medical assessments.
Jonathan investigated.
Then Alessandra died.
He bribed the mechanic not to release evidence publicly because whoever killed her might target the twins if they realized the sabotage had been discovered.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Jonathan looked at him.
“Because Alessandra told me not to.”
Gabriel laughed once.
No humor.
“My wife trusted you more than me?”
“She loved you more than anyone.”
“That's not an answer.”
“She was afraid of what you would do.”
That hurt because Gabriel knew exactly what he would have done.
War.
Blood.
Bodies.
And perhaps his daughters in the middle.
Jonathan continued.
“I installed the hidden cameras.”
Gabriel's eyes narrowed.
“To protect Lily?”
“To identify who was manipulating her environment.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Jonathan slid a photograph across the table.
Dr. Peter Lang.
Lily's neurologist.
But Lang wasn't alone.
Beside him was someone Gabriel never expected.
Nicholas Moretti.
May you like
His brother.
