Chapter 1 - THE MAID BESIDE MY MOTHER

Bennett Hale returned to his mansion early on a Wednesday expecting silence.
Instead, he heard his mother laughing.
Eight months earlier, Eleanor Hale had been diagnosed with stage-four cancer. Since then, Bennett had hired specialists, private nurses, nutritionists, medical coordinators, and every other professional money could provide.
He believed that made him a good son.
Then he reached Eleanor’s room.
Through the half-open door, he saw Clara Reed, one of the housekeepers, kneeling beside his mother’s wheelchair.
Clara was crying.
An electric razor rested in her hand.
Silver strands of Eleanor’s hair covered the towel around her shoulders.
“I’m almost finished,” Clara whispered.
“Stop talking to me like I’m five,” Eleanor said.
Clara laughed through her tears.
“You’re being terribly difficult.”
And Eleanor smiled.
A real smile.
Not the brave one she wore for doctors.
Bennett quietly walked away.
The next morning, he summoned Clara to his office.
“You were hired to clean this house.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Then why are you caring for my mother?”
“Because she was scared.”
“She has nurses.”
“They monitor her condition,” Clara replied. “That’s not the same as sitting beside someone when they think they might die.”
The words irritated him because they were true.
Clara told him about nights Eleanor could not sleep.
About hair falling onto her pillow.
The tea she liked after chemotherapy.
The music she requested when nausea became unbearable.
Things happening beneath Bennett’s own roof.
Things Bennett knew nothing about.
Then Eleanor rolled into the office.
“That girl has treated me more like family than anyone in this house.”
Bennett’s chest tightened.
“Mother, I’ve given you the best care money can buy.”
“Exactly.”
Eleanor’s expression hardened.
“You gave me money.”
Silence.
“Clara gave me her time.”
Bennett could not answer.
Then Eleanor reached for Clara’s hand.
“If you fire her, I’m leaving with her.”
“No one is being fired.”
Bennett believed the conversation was finished.
It was not.
Eleanor watched him for several long seconds.
Then quietly said:
“There’s something you need to know about Clara.”
Clara immediately went pale.
“Mrs. Hale, please.”
“No.”
Eleanor squeezed her hand.
“He should have been told years ago.”
Bennett slowly stood.
“Years ago?”
His mother looked directly at him.
“The first time Clara entered this house, Bennett…”
She paused.
“…she was six years old.”
Bennett stared.
“That’s impossible.”
“No.”
“I would remember.”
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
“You were here.”
Clara looked toward the floor.
Bennett’s voice became colder.
“What happened?”
His mother whispered:
“Your father made sure you forgot.”
And that was the moment Bennett Hale realized the secret had not begun with Clara.
May you like
It had begun with the man whose empire Bennett had inherited.
