Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN ON THE MARBLE FLOOR

At 3:17 A.M., New York's most feared mafia boss opened his bedroom door and nearly tripped over me. I was his quiet housekeeper, sleeping barefoot on the cold marble floor with an old blanket and a fireplace poker beside my hand. When Adrian Moretti demanded to know why I'd been sleeping outside his room every night, I burst into tears—because the truth involved a threat inside his own mansion that even twenty armed guards hadn't noticed.

My name is Claire Bennett, and I'm thirty years old.

Three weeks earlier, I'd started working at the Moretti estate, a sprawling Long Island mansion surrounded by iron gates, security cameras, and armed guards.

My employer was Adrian Moretti.

Thirty-seven years old.

Cold, powerful, and the leader of one of New York's most dangerous mafia organizations.

People whispered that he'd never forgiven a betrayal.

And I'd learned very quickly that nobody questioned his orders.

I was an ordinary woman with shoulder-length brown hair and pale blue eyes. I kept my head down, cleaned the rooms, and avoided getting involved in anything that happened behind those expensive doors.

I needed the paycheck.

And I definitely didn't need trouble.

But trouble found me anyway.

One night, shortly after midnight, I was eating leftover chicken soup alone in the staff kitchen.

That's when Dean Russo walked in.

He was one of Adrian's senior men.

He smelled of whiskey.

And he wasn't alone.

Two other guards followed him inside.

I immediately stood.

"Sorry, sir. I'll finish cleaning up."

Dean stepped into my path.

"What's the hurry, sweetheart?"

"I need to prepare the breakfast room."

He looked me up and down.

"Pretty little thing like you shouldn't be hiding in the kitchen."

I tightened my grip on my soup bowl.

"Please excuse me."

Dean smiled.

"What's wrong? Too good to talk to us?"

"No, sir."

"Then look at me when I'm talking."

I raised my eyes.

He reached toward my face.

I stepped backward.

And my bowl slipped.

Before I could catch it, Dean slapped it from my hands.

Ceramic shattered across the tile.

Hot soup splashed over my uniform.

The other men laughed.

My cheeks burned.

"Look what you did," Dean said.

I stared at the mess.

"I'm sorry."

"Clean it up."

I knelt down, trying to keep my shaking hands steady.

Then a voice came from the doorway.

"No."

Every sound in the kitchen stopped.

Adrian Moretti stood beneath the doorway in dark trousers and a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up.

He glanced at the broken bowl.

Then at my stained uniform.

Finally, his eyes settled on Dean.

"Did she drop that?"

Dean straightened.

"Just an accident, boss."

Adrian didn't move.

"That wasn't my question."

I kept my eyes on the floor.

Dean laughed nervously.

"Come on, Adrian. We're just having a little fun."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Does she look like she's having fun?"

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian looked at me.

"Claire. Stand up."

I slowly rose.

My hands were trembling.

"Did he do that?"

I hesitated.

Dean was standing just a few feet away.

And I knew exactly what happened to people who made powerful men angry.

"It's okay, Mr. Moretti," I whispered.

His jaw tightened.

"That's not what I asked."

Before I could answer, Dean interrupted.

"Boss, she's exaggerating."

Adrian turned toward him.

"Did I give you permission to speak?"

Dean went silent.

For the first time that night, I saw real fear in his eyes.

Adrian took one step closer.

"Apologize to her."

Dean stared.

"What?"

"You heard me."

Dean reluctantly turned.

"Sorry, Claire."

Adrian looked at the broken ceramic.

"Now clean up the mess you made."

Nobody laughed this time.

I thought that would be the end of it.

But later that night, when I returned to my small bedroom in the servants' wing, I found a folded piece of paper beneath my door.

There were only six words.

"You should have kept your mouth shut."

My blood turned cold.

The next night, I heard footsteps outside my room.

Then someone quietly tested the handle.

I didn't sleep.

The following night, it happened again.

And again.

I was terrified to tell Adrian.

Dean had worked for him for years.

I was just the new housekeeper.

So I made a desperate decision.

Every night, after the mansion became quiet, I carried an old blanket and a pillow upstairs.

I slept outside Adrian Moretti's bedroom.

It was the only place in the entire mansion where I believed nobody would dare touch me.

Until that stormy night at 3:17 A.M.

Adrian opened his door.

And found me curled against the wall, clutching a brass fireplace poker.

"What the hell are you doing here, Claire?"

I struggled to stand.

"I'm sorry, sir."

He looked at the blanket.

The pillow.

My bare feet.

Then his expression changed.

"How many nights have you been sleeping here?"

I couldn't answer.

Adrian crouched in front of me.

"Claire, look at me."

Tears spilled down my cheeks.

"Please don't make me go back to my room."

His eyes narrowed.

"Why?"

I swallowed.

"Because someone keeps coming to my door at night."

For several seconds, Adrian didn't speak.

Then he reached for his phone.

But before he could make the call, I grabbed his sleeve.

"Mr. Moretti, please. There's something else."

He looked at me.

May you like

My voice dropped to a whisper.

"I think someone inside this house is planning to hurt you, too."
