Chapter 14 - THE PROMISE UNDER THE CHICAGO SKY

Two years later, we renewed our wedding vows.
Not because our first marriage had failed.
But because we had survived something neither of us could have imagined.
The ceremony took place in our garden.
No politicians.
No powerful associates.
No photographers.
Only family.
Friends.
And four little boys wearing matching blue suits.
Sofia walked toward me beneath an arch of white roses.
She was beautiful.
Not because she looked the way she had on our first wedding day.
She didn't.
Neither did I.
She was beautiful because she had survived.
Because she had fought.
Because she had come home.
When she reached me, her eyes filled.
“Alejandro.”
I took her hands.
“Sofia.”
I spoke first.
“Five years ago, I believed I'd lost you forever.”
My voice broke.
“I spent years living inside a house that felt like a tomb.”
I looked toward our sons.
“Then one afternoon, I came home early.”
The guests smiled.
“And found four little boys eating rice at my dining table.”
Sofia laughed through tears.
“I thought my life had ended when you disappeared.”
I swallowed.
“But it was waiting to begin again.”
I looked into her eyes.
“I promise to listen.”
“To tell you the truth.”
“To protect our family without controlling it.”
“And to be the man our children deserve.”
Sofia squeezed my hands.
“I promise to keep choosing you.”
“Not because I'm afraid.”
“Not because I have nowhere else to go.”
“But because I love the man you're becoming.”
We kissed.
The boys cheered.
Gabriel shouted:
“Now cake!”
Everyone laughed.
Later, under the Chicago sky, Sofia and I danced.
Slowly.
Quietly.
The same song we'd danced to at our first wedding.
She rested her head against my chest.
“Do you think we get a second chance?”
May you like
I smiled.
“I think we're living one.”
