Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT THEY CAME FOR EMMA

Karen Doyle disappeared before police could question her.
Then, one evening, two men attempted to enter the building where Emma was staying under temporary protective arrangements.
Security stopped them.
Police arrested one.
The other escaped.
The arrested man eventually identified Karen as the person who hired them.
He also revealed something unexpected.
Karen wasn't acting alone.
She was working with a financial adviser named Charles Voss.
Voss had managed Richard Vale's trust accounts.
He had access to the documents.
The assets.
And the legal structures that concealed Emma's identity.
If Emma's true parentage became public, the trust would be subject to review.
Their scheme would collapse.
I stared at Detective Kim.
"So this was about money?"
She nodded.
"Money and exposure."
I thought of Emma's taped sneakers.
Her hunger.
Her fear.
Millions of dollars had been hidden in accounts bearing her name.
And she had spent a night alone in a park.
I felt sick.
"Find them," I said.
Sarah looked at me.
"We will."
Then she added:
"And Mr. Blackwell?"
"Yes?"
"Let us do our jobs."

I nodded.
For once, I understood that restraint could protect my children better than revenge.
