Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH ABOUT OLIVIA CARTER

Olivia Carter was arrested in December.

The charges related to the false school communication, conspiracy, harassment, and financial misconduct connected to her dealings with Julian Mercer.

The precise legal consequences would depend on what prosecutors could prove.

The investigation also exposed serious failures at Grace's preschool.

Staff had not followed established pickup procedures.

Communication records were incomplete.

Supervision had broken down.

The school reached a settlement with me and agreed to implement independent safety oversight.

I didn't celebrate.

Money couldn't bring Grace back.

But I wanted the changes to matter.

Julian Mercer faced his own investigation.

Financial records suggested he'd attempted to exploit Alexander's personal crisis to gain control of business assets.

Alexander cooperated with authorities.

His testimony damaged his reputation.

His companies faced scrutiny.

Some of his associates abandoned him.

For years, people had feared his power.

Now they watched him accept consequences.

One evening, Olivia asked to speak with him through her attorney.

Alexander declined.

Instead, he sent a short statement.

My daughter is dead. I will not discuss our past relationship. Please communicate through counsel.

Olivia cried when she read it.

But Alexander never responded.

In Toronto, I watched the news quietly.

Grace's photograph appeared briefly on the screen.

I turned it off.

Priya found me in my office.

“Emily?”

I looked up.

“Sorry. I just need a minute.”

She sat beside me.

“Do you want to go home?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I looked at the project plans on my desk.

A pedestrian bridge.

A safer intersection.

A public plaza.

I had chosen to work on a new urban safety initiative.

Part of it involved improving visibility near schools and pedestrian crossings.

Priya followed my gaze.

“You're doing good work.”

My eyes filled.

I nodded.

“I'm trying.”

That evening, I walked along the waterfront.

The air was cold.

The city lights reflected on the water.

I thought about Olivia.

About Alexander.

About the school.

About every adult who had made a decision that afternoon.

I wanted justice.

But I didn't want revenge to become the rest of my life.

I looked up at the sky.

“Grace,” I whispered, “Mommy's still here.”

And for the first time, I didn't feel guilty for saying it.
