Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO WOULDN'T BE BOUGHT

After the attack, Alessandro offered Sophia a substantial financial gift.
She refused.
He looked surprised.
“Why?”
Sophia folded her arms.
“Because I don't want my daughter to grow up believing powerful men can buy gratitude.”
Alessandro stared.
She continued.
“You've helped us. I'm grateful.”
He nodded.
“But I need to know that anything I accept doesn't come with invisible strings.”
Alessandro considered.
Then said:
“Fair.”
He offered a different arrangement.
A written employment contract with clear duties, hours, and benefits.
Independent legal review.
Childcare support available to all household employees.
And the option to leave without penalty.
Sophia read the proposal carefully.
Then smiled.
“That's better.”
Over the following months, she continued working at the estate while pursuing a certification in early childhood education.
She had always loved working with children.
Emma's curiosity reminded her why.
Alessandro encouraged her studies but did not control them.
Their relationship changed slowly.
They began talking over coffee.
Sometimes in the kitchen.
Sometimes in the garden.
Sophia told him about Puerto Rico.
About her grandmother.
About the day Emma was born.
Alessandro told her about Lucia.
About his childhood.
About the loneliness of growing up in a family where affection was often mistaken for weakness.
One evening, Sophia asked:
“Do you ever wish you'd chosen a different life?”
Alessandro looked toward the city.
“Every day lately.”
She studied him.
“Then choose one.”
He smiled sadly.
“It's not that simple.”
Sophia nodded.
“No.”
Then she added:
“But difficult isn't the same as impossible.”

He looked at her.
And for the first time, he believed her.
