Chapter 5 - THE VIDEO ELI LEFT BEHIND

The memory card contained eleven video files.

Most showed equipment tests.

Metal engraving.

Computer screens.

Technical measurements.

But the final file was different.

Eli sat alone in a workshop.

His face was pale.

He looked directly into the camera.

Then began signing.

I watched with Salvatore and Detective Velez.

Eli's hands moved quickly.

If you're seeing this, something happened.

My throat tightened.

I found something in the engraving system. The machine wasn't being used for ordinary manufacturing.

He paused.

It was producing counterfeit identification plates and serial tags for equipment shipments.

Velez leaned forward.

Eli continued.

The shipping records don't match the physical inventory.

He showed several photographs.

Crates.

Labels.

Serial numbers.

Then he signed:

I told Rafael. He said I should forget what I saw.

My stomach dropped.

Eli looked into the camera.

I didn't.

He held up a small silver bird pendant.

The same design as my bracelet.

Then he signed:

Tessa, I'm sorry. I know you worry. But I couldn't pretend this was normal.

His expression softened.

You taught me that silence isn't the same as agreement.

I began crying.

Salvatore reached for my hand.

I didn't pull away.

Eli continued.

If they say I ran away, don't believe them.

The video ended.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Detective Velez looked at Salvatore.

“This is evidence of a potentially serious criminal operation.”

Salvatore nodded.

She continued.

“We'll need access to company records.”

He signed:

You'll have it.

Velez studied him.

“Even if it implicates your family?”

Salvatore didn't hesitate.

Especially then.

I looked at him.

For the first time, I believed he genuinely wanted to find Eli.

Not because it protected his reputation.

May you like

But because he understood what had been done.

And because he knew silence could be weaponized.
