Chapter 14 - THE WOMAN WHO CHOSE HERSELF

One year after Gabriel's birth, I returned to Chicago.
Not to live in Vincent's mansion.
Not to become Mrs. Moretti again.
I returned to open a new branch of the nonprofit organization I had joined in New York.
The Bennett Family Resource Center.
A place where single mothers could receive childcare assistance, job training, and emergency financial support.
I used my savings.
My experience.
And the connections I had built independently.
Vincent offered funding.
I accepted a donation through the organization's normal process.
No special privileges.
No control.
No strings.
He smiled when I explained the conditions.
“You negotiate harder than my attorneys.”
I laughed.
“Good.”
Gabriel was learning to walk.
He had Vincent's dark eyes.
My stubbornness.
And an extraordinary talent for throwing food.
Vincent adored him.
He attended every important milestone.
And when he couldn't, he called.
Not to check on me.
Not to control me.
But to be present.
Over time, something changed between us.
We began talking.
Really talking.
About our childhoods.
Our fears.
Our mistakes.
The marriage we had destroyed.
And the possibility of building something different.
One evening, Vincent invited me to dinner.
Not at a private club.
Not at a luxury restaurant.
At a small Italian place near the lake.
He looked nervous.
I smiled.
“What's wrong?”
He laughed.
“Nothing.”
“Vincent.”
He sighed.
“I want to ask you something.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“Should I be worried?”
“Possibly.”
He reached across the table.
Then stopped.
Waiting.
I took his hand.
His expression softened.
“Claire.”
“Yes?”
“Would you go on a date with me?”
I laughed.
“This isn't a date?”
He smiled.
“I didn't want to assume.”
My heart tightened.
For the first time, Vincent Moretti was asking instead of deciding.
I looked at him.
Then smiled.
“Yes.”
May you like
He exhaled.
And for the first time in years, I felt hope without fear.
