Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO LET GO

The legal proceedings were complicated.

Owen's biological parentage was clear.

His legal status required careful review.

Gideon had been deceived.

Mallerie had been robbed of her child.

And Owen had formed strong attachments to both adults.

Rebecca explained that the court would focus on the child's welfare.

Mallerie listened carefully.

Then asked:

“Will they make him choose?”

Rebecca shook her head.

“Not like that.”

Gideon looked toward the nursery.

He had never imagined loving someone could mean accepting that he might not be their father.

One evening, he found Mallerie sitting beside Owen's crib.

The baby was asleep.

She looked exhausted.

Gideon stood in the doorway.

“Can we talk?”

She nodded.

He sat beside her.

“I've been thinking.”

Mallerie waited.

“If the court decides Owen should live with you, I won't fight to take him away.”

Her eyes filled.

Gideon continued.

“I'll ask to remain in his life, if that's possible and if you believe it's good for him.”

Mallerie stared.

“You'd do that?”

He nodded.

“I love him.”

His voice broke.

“And I love him enough not to turn his life into a war.”

Mallerie began crying.

She looked at Owen.

Then back at Gideon.

“I don't want him to lose you.”

Gideon stared.

She continued.

“You've been his father in every way you knew how.”

His eyes filled.

“I don't know what our family is going to look like,” Mallerie whispered.

Gideon nodded.

“Neither do I.”

Then she smiled sadly.

“But maybe we can figure it out without hurting him.”

Gideon reached for her hand.

She took it.

For the first time, they were not standing on opposite sides of a mystery.

They were standing on the same side of a child's future.
