Chapter 14 - THE VERDICT AND THE PROMISE

The legal proceedings lasted nearly two years.
Anthony Caruso faced charges connected to the warehouse operation, financial crimes, and the sabotage that caused Thomas Bennett's death.
Vanessa faced separate charges arising from the ladder incident and her efforts to conceal evidence.
The cases were complicated.
There were hearings.
Testimony.
Disputed documents.
And painful memories.
Adeline testified.
She spoke about her father.
About the ladder.
About the threats.
About the years of unanswered questions.
Her voice trembled at first.
Then steadied.
She looked toward the judge.
“My father was a careful man.”
She paused.
“He deserved to come home.”
The courtroom fell silent.
The proceedings ultimately resulted in convictions on significant charges, with sentences imposed according to the court's findings.
No verdict could bring Thomas Bennett back.
But the official record no longer called his death a simple accident.
Afterward, Adeline visited his grave.
Roman accompanied her.
She placed a small wooden bird beside the headstone.
“I made this for you, Dad.”
Her eyes filled.
“They finally know.”
Roman stood a few steps away.
Adeline looked toward him.
Then smiled through tears.
“Thank you for helping me.”
He shook his head.
“You did the hardest part.”
She approached.
Took his hand.
And whispered:
“I think I'm ready to stop living in the day he died.”
Roman looked at her.
“Then let's build something worth living for.”
She smiled.
“Together?”
May you like
He nodded.
“Together.”
