Chapter 6 - THE SECRET UNDER THE WELL

The notebook led us to the abandoned stone well behind the barn.
Hive 7.
Hive 12.
Hive 19.
The numbers corresponded to three metal bolts beneath the old wooden cover.
Marco removed them carefully.
Inside the sealed compartment was a metal box.
The box contained a flash drive.
Financial records.
And a handwritten letter.
Addressed to me.
I opened it with trembling hands.
Emma,
The evidence in this box belongs to people who were hurt by Victor Hale.
If the day comes when you need it, use it carefully.
Do not let revenge become your purpose.
I made that mistake once.
I hope you never do.
Love, Dad.
Dante examined the documents.
His face hardened.
“These are the records we couldn't find.”
I looked at him.
“What records?”
“Proof that Victor moved money through companies connected to several violent crimes.”
My stomach tightened.
“Will they be enough?”
“With the right investigation, they could be.”
I looked toward the farmhouse.
My father had hidden the evidence here.
Under the well.
Where nobody would think to look.
Then I noticed another envelope.
It contained a small photograph of Eleanor.
And a handwritten address in Vermont.
I stared at it.
“Dante.”
He turned.
“What?”
I showed him.
His expression changed.
“That's a medical facility.”
My heart began pounding.
“Do you think she's there?”
May you like
He looked at the address.
“I think we need to find out.”
