Chương 9 - WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ORSINI NAME

Vittorio took a plea.

He admitted conspiracy related to coercive acquisition practices, fraudulent filings, and obstruction.

He still denied ordering the Fontaine fire.

Marco Vella’s case went to trial.

Evidence tied him closely enough to the scheme that a jury convicted him on multiple counts.

No cinematic courtroom confession.

Just documents.

Testimony.

Bank transfers.

The boring machinery of accountability.

Orleans Meridian no longer existed by then.

Carmine dissolved it.

Sold unaffected assets.

Used proceeds for claims.

Several development projects transferred to independent management.

Carmine also reorganized Orsini Holdings.

Palmira called the process:

“Finally putting adults in charge.”

He was thirty-five.

He ignored the insult.

More surprising was what happened outside legitimate businesses.

Carmine withdrew from several operations that depended on coercion and unreported cash.

Not cleanly.

No one leaves old structures simply by announcing personal growth.

There were negotiations.

Losses.

Threats.

Men who believed he had become weak.

Carmine accepted some legal exposure through restructuring and disclosures.

He did not tell Nell details she did not need to carry.

But he also did not pretend his past disappeared.

One evening she asked:

“Are you still a dangerous man?”

They were sitting on her apartment balcony.

Carmine thought.

“Yes.”

Nell nodded.

“Good answer.”

“Does that scare you?”

“Sometimes.”

He looked at her.

“And?”

“I don't need you harmless.”

She paused.

“I need you accountable.”

That sentence became important.

Carmine could not promise never to be angry.

Never to have enemies.

Never to possess power.

He could decide what power was allowed to justify.

Months later, Nell met with her commercial lender about opening a second bakery.

Carmine did not offer money.

It nearly killed him.

“You look sick.”

“I am.”

“Why?”

“I know a building.”

“No.”

“I didn't finish.”

“No.”

“It has excellent foot traffic.”

“Carmine.”

“I will say nothing.”

He lasted eleven minutes.

Eventually Nell leased a second location herself.

The landlord happened to be an Orsini competitor.

Carmine was deeply offended.

Nell found this delightful.

Palmira attended opening day.

So did Carmine.

He waited in line.

Paid full price.

A reporter photographed him carrying six boxes of pastries.

Headline:

ORSINI BOSS WAITS 27 MINUTES FOR PECAN PIE

Palmira framed it.

Carmine threatened to burn the newspaper.

Nell said:

“Careful.”

Everyone went quiet.

Then Carmine started laughing.

So did Nell.

The joke could exist now because he had spent years proving fire was no longer something his family used to solve business problems.

May you like

That mattered.
