Chapter 9 - WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE PLANE

Six months later, everything was different.

Elena was home.

Actually home.

She no longer traveled without explaining why.

Salvatore cooperated with investigators and received a reduced sentence.

Moretti went to prison.

Voss faced dozens of charges.

Luca returned to school.

Nico learned to walk.

Maya hated this because he now stole her toys more efficiently.

And Matteo Rinaldi did something nobody expected.

He dismantled large portions of his own criminal organization.

Not overnight.

Not magically.

He couldn't erase his past because a child had been kind to his son.

But he could decide what happened next.

He converted his legitimate security companies into a foundation supporting families targeted by illegal surveillance.

Elena helped design the privacy systems.

Leah refused to call Matteo Uncle Matteo.

For three months.

Then she accidentally did it while asking for pancakes.

He never let her forget.

One afternoon, Leah returned from school and found a package.

Inside was a yellow plastic airplane.

A note:

FOR THE GIRL WHO NOTICED WHAT EVERY ADULT MISSED.

No signature.

She knew.

Matteo.

Leah smiled.

Then Maya grabbed it.

“Mine.”

“No!”

They fought.

Elena separated them.

Normal.

Beautifully normal.

But one question remained.

Why had Nico screamed?

The device hadn't shocked him.

It hadn't hurt him.

Elena eventually discovered the answer.

The disc emitted a faint ultrasonic calibration signal.

Adults couldn't hear it.

Most babies could.

Nico had been trying to escape the sound.

Leah had been right from the beginning.

He wasn't hungry.

He wasn't sick.

May you like

He was afraid.
