Chapter 8 - HALE’S DINER CHANGES HANDS

By Martha’s seventy-fourth birthday, standing eight hours behind the counter had become impossible.
Her knees hurt.
Her hands stiffened.
The walker stayed.
Daniel’s letter returned to her mind.
Don’t turn that diner into a tomb.
So she made a decision nobody expected.
She did not give the diner to the four veterans.
She did not sell it to a developer.
She created a small operating company.
Martha retained ownership of the land and building.
The restaurant business itself became:
Hale & Company Diner LLC.
Ownership:
Martha — 40%.
Mason — 20%.
Cole — 15%.
Luis — 15%.
Jack — 10%.
“Why do I get ten?” Jack asked.
“You can’t cook.”
Fair.
Mason became kitchen manager.
Cole handled maintenance.
Luis managed accounting and vendors.
Jack dealt with suppliers, staffing, and whatever problem did not require culinary talent.
Martha worked three mornings a week.
Exactly three.
The first Monday she stayed home, she sat in her kitchen upstairs and hated everyone.
By noon, she walked downstairs.
Mason blocked the kitchen entrance.
“You’re off.”
“I own forty percent.”
“You wrote the schedule.”
“I can change it.”
Luis appeared.
“Board vote?”
Martha stared at them.
Traitors.
She went back upstairs.
Then did something radical.
Took a nap.
May you like
Daniel would have been proud.
