Chapter 7 - The Reckoning of the Callous Master

Lena sank against the counter, sobbing in pure, disbelieving wonder as Maya reached across the wood and took Lena’s calloused, hardworking hands into her own.

"You survived..." Lena wept, gently stroking Maya’s cheek. "Look at you... you survived, my sweet girl!"

"I survived because of you, Lena," Maya said softly, kissing Lena’s knuckles. "Because when the whole world looked through me, you saw a human being."

Grisham stepped forward, attempting to force a charming, servile grin onto his face.

"Excuse me, Miss Sterling!" Grisham stammered, recognizing the name of the multi-billionaire tech founder whose company had just acquired thirty percent of the city's commercial district. "Are you acquainted with this woman? I am Grisham, President of the Vendor Association! We were just clearing this illegal stall to build a luxury plaza in your honor—"

Maya slowly turned around.

The tenderness in her eyes vanished, replaced by an aura of glacial, diamond-grade wrath that made Grisham’s knees shake.

"I know exactly who you are, Mr. Grisham," Maya spoke, each word cutting deeper than a razor blade. "Fifteen years ago, you fired this woman because she gave a starving child a hotdog."

Grisham’s face drained of every single drop of color until he looked like wet drywall. "What...?! That... that was you?!"

Julian Hayes stepped forward, unzipping a heavy black leather briefcase.

"Mr. Grisham, Inspector Cole," Julian announced with lethal legal precision. "At 1:00 PM today, Aegis Horizon Capital completed the 100% buyout of the District Vendor Logistics Association's master charter and mortgage bonds."

Julian handed two sealed federal subpoenas directly into their trembling hands.

"Furthermore, forensic digital audits have uncovered fourteen counts of commercial extortion, bribery of municipal inspectors, and unlawful vendor intimidation under the RICO Act. Your licenses are revoked, your assets are frozen, and federal marshals are waiting at your office."

Inspector Cole gasped, dropping his clipboard, while Grisham collapsed onto the sidewalk, clutching his chest in bitter, irreversible ruin.
