Chapter 8 - A CROWN BUILT ON LIES

Carlo's arrest detonated across New York.

Within forty-eight hours, federal investigators raided companies connected to Silvio Marchetti.

Politicians resigned.

Bankers hired criminal attorneys.

Three senior Verrone associates disappeared.

Damiano did something nobody expected.

He called a meeting.

Not of criminals.

Of lawyers.

Accountants.

Compliance officers.

Legitimate business executives.

“I want everything separated,” he said.

Rafael stared.

“Everything?”

“Every legal company stays. Every criminal operation ends.”

“That will create enemies.”

“We already have enemies.”

“It will cost hundreds of millions.”

Damiano looked through the glass wall toward Mia, who was drawing at a conference table.

“Then consider it expensive tuition.”

The transformation wasn't simple.

Old loyalties resisted.

People threatened him.

But Damiano had Sofia's records.

He knew every hidden account.

Every compromised official.

Every illegal partnership.

Instead of using the information to expand his empire, he used it to dismantle the dangerous parts.

Then came another surprise.

Isabella announced she and Mia were leaving.

Damiano stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because Mia needs normal.”

“I can give her normal.”

“You live behind bulletproof glass.”

“I can change that.”

“Can you?”

Damiano had no answer.

That night, he found Mia packing.

“Where are you going?”

“Aunt Isabella says we're moving.”

“Do you want to?”

Mia looked down.

“I want her.”

“Of course.”

“And…”

She hesitated.

“You.”

Damiano sat beside her.

“You shouldn't have to choose.”

“Adults always say that right before making kids choose.”

The sentence wounded him.

She was right.

So the next morning, Damiano went to Isabella.

“No custody battle.”

She stared at him.

“What?”

“You raised her. You're her mother in every meaningful sense.”

“Damiano—”

“I lost seven years. That doesn't entitle me to steal the person who gave her those seven years.”

Isabella's eyes filled.

“What are you proposing?”

“We raise her together.”

“How?”

“I don't know.”

For once, Damiano Verrone admitted the truth.

“I have no idea.”

Isabella laughed through her tears.

It was the beginning.

Not romance.

Not yet.

Trust.

They found a brownstone near Mia's school.

Damiano kept his Manhattan residence but spent more nights at the brownstone.

He learned to make pancakes badly.

He learned six-year-olds considered bedtime a negotiation.

He learned glitter could somehow travel through closed doors.

And he learned Mia talked in her sleep.

One night, passing her room, he heard her whisper:

“Daddy.”

Damiano stopped.

Then Mia said:

“Don't leave.”

He entered.

May you like

She was asleep.

He sat beside her until sunrise.
