Chapter 14 - THE NIGHT I RETURNED TO THE PRESIDENTIAL RESIDENCE

One year after the rainy Friday night, I returned to the presidential residence.

Not with Adrian.

Not with investigators.

Alone.

The suite had been restored to its original purpose.

The unauthorized executive access had been revoked.

The financial controls had been corrected.

And the private residence was once again reserved for approved family and corporate uses.

I stood beside the windows overlooking Lake Michigan.

The city glittered below.

On the desk sat a photograph of my father.

He was smiling.

Holding a cup of coffee.

Looking as though he'd just told a joke.

I touched the frame.

“Hi, Dad.”

My voice broke.

I told him about the company.

The employees.

The changes.

The mistakes I'd made.

The things I'd learned.

Then I told him about Thomas.

I laughed softly.

“You'd like him.”

I sat in my father's favorite chair.

For a long time, I watched the water.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Julian.

The employee scholarship fund exceeded its annual goal.

I smiled.

My father had started that fund twenty years earlier.

It paid for education and professional training for hotel employees and their families.

I typed:

Wonderful. Please thank everyone involved.

Then I looked around the suite.

A year earlier, I'd discovered my husband had been using this place to betray me.

Now it felt like something else.

A reminder that ownership was not about possession.

It was about responsibility.

I stood.

Walked toward the door.

And turned off the lights.

May you like

For the first time, I left the presidential residence without feeling as though I was losing something.

I was simply going home.
