Chapter 8 - PIER 19

Pier 19 contained enough evidence to destroy Vivian's network.
Weapons manifests.
Bank records.
Names.
Videos.
And one audio file.
Vivian discussing Gabriel's ambush.
There was no longer any doubt.
But Vivian still had one weapon.
She released evidence of Gabriel's own criminal empire to federal authorities.
Agents surrounded the estate before dawn.
Gabriel surrendered.
Claire stared at him.
“You knew this could happen?”
“Yes.”
“And you're just going?”
“I have spent twenty years believing power meant never answering to anyone.”
He looked at Emma asleep in Claire's arms.
“I was wrong.”
Gabriel gave prosecutors everything.
His crimes.
Vivian's crimes.
Corrupt officials.
Illegal businesses.
He asked for no immunity.
Marcus called him insane.
Claire understood.
“You want it finished.”
“Yes.”
“All of it?”
“All of it.”
Vivian was arrested at JFK attempting to leave the country.
Her trial exposed a network stretching across three states.
Gabriel testified against her.
Then he testified about himself.
Months later, he stood before a judge.
Actually stood.
No wheelchair.
No cane.
His legs still hurt.
His balance remained imperfect.
But he stood.
The judge acknowledged his cooperation but refused to erase his past.
Gabriel received three years in federal prison.
Claire cried.
Gabriel didn't.
Emma asked, “Is Mr. Gabe going to school?”
Claire knelt.
“Sort of.”
“Can I visit?”
Gabriel crouched carefully.
“If your mother lets you.”
Emma hugged him.
“Your feet are awake now.”
Gabriel closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Don't let them sleep again.”
“I won't.”
Then he looked at Claire.
“Don't wait for me.”
She hated him for saying it.
So she kissed him in front of everyone.
May you like
“I wasn't asking permission.”
