Chapter 11 - THE PRICE OF LOYALTY

Roarke learned about the attempted intimidation less than an hour later.

He was in a meeting with federal investigators and his attorney when Nora entered.

"Adeline and Posy are safe."

Roarke stood.

"What happened?"

Nora explained.

His expression became colder with every sentence.

When she finished, he looked at the investigators.

"I want to provide everything we have."

His attorney glanced at him.

"Roarke—"

"Everything relevant."

He turned toward the window.

He had spent his adult life believing loyalty meant protecting the people who served him.

But Silvio had used that belief as cover.

Roarke now understood something he had resisted for years.

A criminal empire didn't become safe because its leader believed he was honorable.

It remained dangerous because the system rewarded secrecy, intimidation, and obedience.

And Roarke had benefited from that system.

He couldn't deny it.

He couldn't erase it.

But he could stop protecting it.

Over the following weeks, Roarke provided records, submitted to interviews, and began dismantling the illegal operations he had inherited.

The process exposed misconduct within several companies.

Some associates were arrested.

Others fled.

Several legitimate businesses entered restructuring.

Roarke faced scrutiny of his own decisions.

He accepted that.

Meanwhile, Adeline and Posy moved into temporary housing arranged through a victim-support organization.

Adeline insisted on making the arrangements through her attorney.

Roarke respected that.

He didn't visit uninvited.

He didn't demand updates.

He didn't treat her safety as a reason to control her life.

Instead, he sent one message.

I'm glad you're both safe. I'm sorry my world brought this to your door.

Adeline read it twice.

Then replied:

You didn't make Silvio choose what he did. But you do have to choose what happens next.

Roarke stared at the words.

May you like

Then typed:

I know.
