Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK

Cassandra was arrested in Connecticut six weeks later.
She had been staying in a rented house under a false name.
Adrian Vale was arrested shortly afterward.
The investigation uncovered evidence of embezzlement, fraud, child mistreatment, and efforts to conceal records.
But the most painful discovery concerned Isabella.
The investigators determined that the vehicle's maintenance documentation had been falsified before the crash.
Adrian had authorized the work through a shell company.
Cassandra had communicated with him repeatedly in the days before Isabella died.
The evidence supported criminal charges connected to the fatal incident.
Matteo sat in silence when he learned.
I was beside him.
He didn't speak for a long time.
Then he whispered:
“She knew.”
I looked at him.
“Isabella knew they were stealing.”
He covered his face.
“And they killed her.”
I held his hand.
There were no words that could make it better.
No amount of money could bring Isabella back.
No punishment could restore the months Leah had spent terrified.
But the truth mattered.
And now the people responsible would have to face it.
Later that evening, Matteo entered Leah's bedroom.
She was sitting on the floor with her stuffed rabbit.
He knelt beside her.
“Princess?”
She looked up.
“Yes, Daddy?”
He swallowed.
“I'm sorry.”
Leah frowned.
“Why?”
“Because I didn't understand how scared you were.”
She stared at him.
Then reached for his face.
“Daddy sad?”
He nodded.
“A little.”
Leah hugged him.
“Emmy says hugs help.”
Matteo laughed through tears.
“Yes.”
May you like
He held her tightly.
“They do.”
