Chapter 1 - THE WAITRESS WHO ANSWERED THE IMPOSSIBLE QUESTION

A billionaire stood in front of a room full of CEOs, diplomats, and academics and offered $100 to whoever answered a forgotten Arabic question, because he was sure he would embarrass everyone there. The moment I answered, behind my desk, his confidence crumbled, and every powerful person in the room noticed that I knew a language they thought had disappeared forever.\
My name is Hannah, and no one in the Meridian Room ever looked at me twice.\
At twenty-seven, I worked double shifts six days a week, bringing expensive meals to wealthy strangers and disappearing into the back room before anyone could even learn my name. That's exactly how most clients preferred.\
They saw a waiter.\
They never imagined they were facing someone who knew forgotten languages.\
When I was little, my grandfather used to teach me handwritten manuscripts that seemed to be on the verge of disappearing. While the other children watched TV, I memorized ancient alphabets and sounds that were never pronounced aloud, a generation at a time.\
He would always finish his lessons the same way.\
— Words survive more than kingdoms. One day they will open a door that no one can find anymore.\
I never quite understood what he meant.\
Until that night.\
Just after seven, three SUVs black pulled up in front of the restaurant. The security guards cleared the entrance before Khalid Al-Masri finally walked in.\
The whole room changed.\
The conversations stopped. Heads turned. Even those who thought they were important lowered their voices.\
My manager came running towards me.\
— Hannah. You'll take care of the main table.\
— Why?\
— Because you never lose your cool.\
I smiled slightly.\
— I'm just better at hiding my panic.\
Khalid took a seat and laughed.\
— So... are you going to do your famous challenge tonight?\
A smile crossed Khalid's face, as if he knew what was coming.\
The waiters appeared.\
People leaned in.\
Everyone seemed to know exactly what was next.\
At 7:48 PM, Khalid stood up from his chair.\
The musicians stopped playing.\
The silence swallowed the hall.\
— Ten years ago — he announced —, I asked a single question in universities, embassies, royal palaces, and private collections. No one ever answered correctly.\
Then he spoke.\
The language was not modern Arabic.\
Nor was it classical Arabic.\
The sounds went deeper into history.\
A linguist from Columbia shook his head.\
— I've never heard that dialect.\
The United Nations interpreter shook his head slowly.\
Until a businessman who boasted about speaking Arabic fluently admitted defeat.\
Khalid observed the hall with a silent satisfaction.\
— Nobody?\
I should have stayed silent.\
But the words escaped before I could stop them.\
— The third word is not pronounced correctly.\
All faces turned to me.\
— A waiter? — someone mocked.\
I calmly put down my tray on a nearby table.\
— This pronunciation came centuries ago — I said. — Before the Fifth Migration, the final sound was pronounced in a different way.\
For the first time that night, Khalid's expression changed.\
Confidence disappeared.\
He stared at me.\
— Who taught you that?\
I replied in the same forgotten language.\
Not with a translation.\
Not with a guess.\
I gave the complete answer, exactly as it should be pronounced.\
The hall froze.\
The professor was left speechless.\
The interpreter whispered:\
— This is impossible... this language has been lost for centuries.\
Khalid took a slow step towards me, studying my face as if trying to remember someone he had never met.\
His voice dropped to a whisper until I could hear it.\
— You didn't just understand the question.\
His eyes fixed on mine.\
May you like
— You recognized the hidden word.\
The story is too long to fit here, so leave a "I want more" in the comments and I'll continue from there. Thank you for following me this far! ✨
