Chapter 10 - THE BOARDROOM BETRAYAL

The answer led directly to Charles Whitmore.

Records obtained through the independent investigation showed that a company associated with the Ashford family had paid for Victoria's travel and accommodations.

The payments were part of a consulting arrangement.

Victoria had been brought back to New York to help influence Ethan.

And possibly to undermine his marriage.

Ethan stared at the records.

“My father arranged this.”

Naomi nodded.

“The evidence suggests coordination.”

Richard Hale, meanwhile, had not leaked the marriage agreement.

He had been pressured to provide access.

When he refused, someone obtained a copy through a shared legal archive.

The inquiry continued.

Then Richard came forward voluntarily.

He provided emails showing that Charles had discussed using the marriage controversy to delay Ethan's control over the trust.

Ethan looked exhausted.

I sat beside him.

“Are you alright?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

I took his hand.

“Do you want to talk?”

He looked at me.

Then whispered:

“I spent my entire life trying to make him proud.”

My heart broke.

“He never wanted me to be better than him,” Ethan said.

“He wanted me to obey him.”

I leaned against his shoulder.

“You don't have to keep earning his approval.”

He closed his eyes.

The decisive board meeting took place the following week.

Ethan presented the financial analysis opposing the merger.

Naomi outlined the governance concerns.

Independent directors reviewed the newly discovered records.

Charles attempted to dismiss the evidence.

But the questions became increasingly difficult.

Finally, Ethan stood.

“Dad.”

Charles looked up.

“You taught me that Whitmore Capital was built on discipline.”

Charles nodded.

“But discipline without integrity is just control.”

Silence filled the room.

Ethan continued.

“You were willing to risk hundreds of jobs to complete a merger that benefited your allies.”

Charles's expression hardened.

“You don't understand the pressures of leadership.”

Ethan looked at him.

“Then perhaps leadership should begin with accountability.”

The board voted to suspend the merger pending independent review.

Charles was removed from day-to-day executive authority while the investigation continued.

The trust dispute proceeded through legal channels.

It wasn't a complete victory.

But it was enough to stop the immediate threat.

Outside the building, Ethan took my hand.

Reporters shouted questions.

Cameras flashed.

He turned toward me.

“Ready?”

I smiled.

“For what?”

He kissed me.

May you like

In front of everyone.

And for the first time, I didn't care who was watching.
