Chapter 12 - THE TRUTH THAT BROKE THE EMPIRE

Thomas Carter returned to Chicago under legal protection.

His testimony helped investigators reopen the case involving Adrien's father's death.

The notebook contained maintenance records that contradicted the original accident findings.

Additional evidence connected Victor Hale to financial misconduct and efforts to conceal the vehicle tampering.

The investigation expanded.

Several former employees came forward.

Martin Vale cooperated.

Adrien provided company records.

The process was long.

Difficult.

Public.

And for the first time, Adrien stopped trying to control every outcome.

He allowed investigators to do their work.

He also began restructuring his businesses to remove the practices that had allowed Hale to gain power.

Some associates objected.

Others left.

Adrien accepted it.

One evening, I found him sitting alone in his office.

He looked exhausted.

"Bad day?" I asked.

He smiled faintly.

"Complicated."

I sat beside him.

"Want to talk?"

He looked at me.

"For years, I thought power meant never letting anyone see weakness."

I nodded.

"And now?"

He looked toward the window.

"Now I think it means admitting when something is wrong."

I smiled.

"That's a start."

He laughed.

"You always have an opinion."

"Several."

He took my hand.

And for the first time, I didn't pull away.
