Chapter 13 - THE LAST LIE OF BIANCA FERRARO

Bianca had always been good at making cruelty look like concern.
Now she tried to make evidence destruction look like family dignity.
Her attorneys claimed the renewed investigation was causing unnecessary suffering.
They argued Sofia deserved to rest.
They insisted Philippe was being manipulated by Haven Hart.
But Detective Vega had already secured the relevant court orders.
Bianca's motion failed.
The medical evidence was preserved.
And the original hospital records were compared against Margaret's nursing note.
The discrepancies were impossible to ignore.
Dr. Leonard Ashford had altered the official report.
Gabriel Moretti had given a false statement.
Bianca had received financial benefits after Sofia's death.
The Red Hook records established motive.
Sofia's letter established fear.
Margaret's note identified Bianca.
And Evelyn's hidden evidence connected the entire sequence.
Still, Bianca refused to confess.
She called Philippe.
He answered on video.
Haven sat beside him.
Bianca's face appeared on the screen.
Perfect makeup.
Pearls.
Controlled expression.
“Philippe, darling.”
He signed as he spoke.
“What do you want?”
“I want you to stop this madness.”
“It's an investigation.”
“It's a witch hunt.”
“You're accused of killing my sister.”
Bianca's expression flickered.
Then hardened.
“You always were too emotional about Sofia.”
Haven felt Philippe go still.
Bianca continued.
“She was a difficult child.”
Philippe's hands stopped.
For a moment, he looked like the twenty-two-year-old brother who had lost her.
Then Haven touched his wrist.
Not to silence him.
To remind him he wasn't alone.
He looked at her.
She signed:
You don't have to convince her Sofia mattered.
Philippe closed his eyes.
Then turned back to Bianca.
“You don't get to speak about her that way.”
Bianca laughed bitterly.
“You think that girl beside you understands our family?”
Philippe signed the question to Haven.
She replied:
I understand enough.
He translated.
Bianca's face twisted.
“You've destroyed everything.”
Haven raised her hands.
No.
Philippe translated.
Your choices did that.
Bianca stared.
Then she said something neither expected.
“Evelyn should have stayed away from my husband.”
Haven froze.
Philippe frowned.
“What?”
Bianca smiled.
A terrible smile.
“You never knew, did you?”
Philippe leaned forward.
“Know what?”
Bianca looked directly at Haven.
“Your mother wasn't innocent.”
Haven felt the old instinct to defend Evelyn rise.
But she waited.
Bianca continued.
“Vittorio trusted her. Too much.”
Philippe's expression changed.
“You're saying my father had an affair with Evelyn?”
Bianca shrugged.
“Ask yourself why he protected her.”
Haven stared.
Her mother had never mentioned Vittorio beyond saying she once worked for a wealthy family.
Could Bianca be telling the truth?
Philippe looked at Haven.
He didn't answer for her.
He didn't tell her what to believe.
He simply waited.
Haven raised her hands.
Even if my mother had a relationship with Vittorio, that wouldn't justify killing Sofia.
Philippe translated.
Bianca's smile vanished.
Haven continued.
And it wouldn't explain the false medical report, the payments to Gabriel, or the threats against Margaret.
Bianca stared.
For the first time, she had no clever response.
Then Philippe spoke.
“You're finished.”
He ended the call.
Haven looked at him.
Are you okay?
He shook his head.
No.
She nodded.
Neither am I.
He looked at her.
Then signed:
But we're still here.
Haven took his hand.
For the first time, she didn't pull away.
That evening, Detective Vega called.
Bianca had been arrested.
Trevor Ashford had agreed to cooperate.
And Dr. Leonard Ashford was being questioned about falsified medical records.
The investigation wasn't over.
The trial would take time.
But the woman who had once laughed at a Deaf waitress in a ballroom was finally facing consequences she couldn't dismiss with a smile.
Haven stood beside the apartment window.
Brooklyn lights stretched into the distance.
Philippe approached.
What are you thinking?
She looked at him.
My mother spent years afraid of your family.
He nodded.
I know.
And now I'm standing beside you.
His expression softened.
Does that frighten you?
Haven considered.
Then signed:
A little.
He nodded.
Me too.
May you like
She smiled faintly.
Good. At least we're being honest.
