Chapter 8 - THE DINNER WITH NO WEAPONS

Anthony summoned every senior member of the Moretti organization.
Same dining room.
Same long table.
No weapons permitted.
Walter attended.
Michael attended.
Eleanor sat beside Anthony.
Emma and Grace were not there.
Anthony refused to put them in the room.
He placed copies of Nathan’s evidence on the table.
Michael broke first.
“I didn’t know.”
“I believe you.”
Michael stared.
Anthony continued.
“You were eighteen. Dominic told you to deliver a package.”
“I swear to God.”
“I know.”
Michael began crying.
Several men looked away.
In their world, men were permitted to bleed more easily than cry.
Anthony stood.
“My grandfather murdered my father because my father wanted to dismantle parts of this organization.”
Silence.
“He called change betrayal.”
Anthony looked around the table.
“For twenty-six years, I believed loyalty meant preserving what I inherited.”
He removed his gold family ring.
Placed it on the table.
“I was wrong.”
One man stood.
“What are you saying?”
“The illegal businesses end.”
Shock.
Someone laughed.
Anthony continued.
“Gambling operations close. Protection payments stop. Every legitimate company is separated and audited.”
“You’ll destroy us.”
“No.”
Anthony looked at him.
“I’m destroying the thing that taught my grandfather his own son was worth less than power.”
A lieutenant reached inside his jacket.
James moved.
But Walter was faster.
He stepped between the gun and Anthony.
The shot struck Walter in the chest.
Chaos erupted.
James tackled the shooter.
Anthony caught Walter.
The old man collapsed into his arms.
“Stay with me.”
Walter smiled weakly.
“Twenty-six years…”
“Don’t.”
“I should have told you.”
“I know.”
“I loved you like a son.”
Anthony’s eyes filled.
“I know that too.”
Walter survived.
Barely.
And something else survived with him.
May you like
The possibility that love could be real even when loyalty had failed.
